Small Royd speakers
Posted by: xav on 07 April 2003
Hi!
I'm looking for a small pair of Royds to use as rears with my RR1s. I've so far found some Envoys Ex-dem and some 2nd hand A7 mk2s. Has anybody got any thoughts on either of these?

The Envoy is far better than the A7! If it's only for surrounds, though, then I wouldn't worry too much if the price difference is crucial to you. There's also the A7X, Merlins and Squires to consider, if you can find them on the used market.
My home theatre has Royd Squires in front, with the fantastic Royd AV77 center. My surrounds, though, are measly Celestion 120's that I picked up for about $100US. They aren't the greatest speakers in the world, but their bass extension is quite good, they've got a smooth frequency response, and they're fairly efficient (making them an easy load for my Sony receiver).
When the relative volumes of the channels are set properly, the overall presentation is very impressive (especially when there's a big explosion on screen, drawing your attention away from the sound).
Ultimately, don't sweat it. With home theatre, the visuals are most important. Make sure you have a good TV/projector along with a passable audio system, and you'll be happy with the results.

Many thanks for replies!
I didn't realise there was an A7X as well as an A7. Sounds like the A7 could be quite old - I phoned Royd (who were extremely friendly and helpful) and she said the A7 was one of the first speakers they ever made.
I think I'll keep an eye on ebay for a couple of weeks and see if anything turns up.

What does the AV77 look like Mike? I think I have one. Does it have 2 Minstrelesk drivers with a tweeter in the centre.

Yes, although I believe those drivers are the same as the ones in the Doublet. The AV77 is by far the best speaker in my home theatre setup, and that's a good thing, since most of the sound comes from there.

I have recently acquired a pair of Royd Sapphire II. Does anyone have information on these small bookshelf speakers - approx. when were they manufactured, and where do they belong in the Royd hierachi?
Best,
Thom

Weren't there Abbots as well? I thought they were quite large?
Mike
Indeed I have an AV77 as well and it is by far the best speaker in my HT system as well. Replaced a B&W CC3 and made a huge difference for a very reasonable outlay.

The RR1's efficiency is 83dB, so the 140 should be able to drive them, although I would think they might not go really loud. I heard the RR2's (88dB) the other day, driven by a 112/Flat2/150, and they were pretty good as far as volume goes. This will also depend on room size, etc. As usual, you won't know for sure until you try them in your own room.

Richard,
I'm using a Rega Mira 2000 with my RR1s. Seems perfectly OK to me - can go quite loud (although not a large room!)

I've not done a direct comparison. However, I've heard the Doublets on a number of occasions, and my Albions are much, much, much better. Further, I would say that both the RR2 and RR3 are better than the Albion.
BTW, I haven't had a chance to do a side-by-side-comparison, but the particular benefits seem to be a natural & liquid midrange, suprising bass extension, smooth highs, and an ability to disappear that's almost spooky.
I'm hoping to try them at my place at some point, so that I can do a proper comparison.

I do have a good feeling about the Sapphires, but they seem somewhat hard to get to work perfectly ... I'm running them with a Rega Elex integrated. Which amplifier(s) have you used with them?

Yes Xav, I have a thought. Now a lot more people know about these. They may cost you or me a lot more than they would have...
No seriously. I was thinking of bidding on these myself. I have just purchased from a car boot sale a pair of A7 Series 2 for 50 pence. However, the foam surounding the mid/bass is non existant.
Xan, how much are the A7 S2 you are thinking of buying.
The conistons look a newer speaker than the others, the tweeter and grill look more modern but the m/b driver looks the same as my A7's.
I recall somebody saying they will not work either side of a chimney breast. Can anybody comment on this.

Did wonder about drawing attention to them! I always get outbid anyway in the last 10 seconds. The A7s were something like £80 - I didn't buy them. There's another pair on Loot for about £40 if you're interested.
