PS3 backwards compatibility with PS2 games
Posted by: Bosh on 31 December 2007
I was about to buy top-up the kids xmas money to help them get a 40GB PS3 when I read on Amazon reviews a problem with backwards compatibility with some PS2 games. How widespread is the problem?

Thanks for the link which refers to the compatibility of the disconntinued 60GB version which it would seem is somewhat patchy
Reading further there is definitely no PS2 compatibility with the 40GB version so having owned PS1 and 2 Sony wont be getting my money this time
Wonder how many other sales they have lost this time around, unless people dont know. I only found out by chance

I was told by some spotty kid over here in the US that:-
40Gb play no PS2 games
80Gb play 60% of PS2 games
Old 60G play all coz they had the Emotion Engine chips.
This might all be bollox but it is what I was told last weekend.

The original PS3's for Japan and America had the Emotion chip in for full PS2 compatibility.
When the PS3 was released in Europe and other regions, the compatibility was dealt with in software which is why a good percentage of games work to a degree on these models.
The new 40gb model has totally removed these features (and a couple of USB connectors and the SD card slot) to reduce their own costs further.
I managed to get the European 60gb version just before they all sold out and at a reasonable price compared to the 40gb model.
I still do play some PS2 games.
Sony are selling some of the old PS1 games now online which work on both the PS3 and PSP - playing Populus on the PSP at the moment and the online Poker
Steve.
