82 Supercap or Fraim

Posted by: Jonathan Hales on 17 September 2002

I have the (not bad) dilemma of upgrading a CDS2/82/Hi-Cap/SBL system by either substituting the Hi-Cap for a Supercap or ditching the tripods it currently sits upon now and doing the 5 tier Fraim thing for the whole shooting box.

Has anyone been in the same boat?

The price difference is pretty significant but not really a consideration, for me its more about getting the best bang for the approximate bucks and then follow by whatever I dont do next time (if that makes sense)

Johnathon,

I would look at replacing your current stand with the Naim Fraim. I purchased a four tier Naim Fraim last year and it was the best upgrade I have made. It really opens out the music and brings in much more control in the bass department.

I know the Fraim is expensive but I consider it well worth the investment. However go and try it for yourself and see what you think,

I would go and have a fraim delivered to your place for a home dem for about a week and listen to it.
I'm not sure if you've heard the fraim..I'll assume you have since your willing to consider it a viable option; but it my experience it does things that simple black box upgrades can't achieve.
It gives the system a sense of delicacy an intimacy that a supercap won't do.
Power supply upgrades do the typical improvements in bass clarity, definition, attack, increase in the scale of the sound, more depth and weight, reduction in glare...but they won't give you the magic of the fraim.
The fraim allows the naim kit to communicate more effectively spatial cues are easier to follow and openess to to the sound is evident.
As a result complex passage, vocal inflections and phrasings are beautifully evident.
And not that it should make to much difference it does look rather delicious.
Once you own one you can tell your mates to come round and watch you polish your balls!!
big grin
So my advice is listen to your system fraimed..it's such a dealer thing to say but the fraim will work on every part of your system cd player, pre amp etc.....

The degree of difference a support makes is much more room dependent than for the electronics

Hi Jonathan,

Just to let you know that I have the exact system as you and come across the crossroad. Especially Naim may not produce supercap in olive box in the near future. The time is running out!!!!

Surely will keep an eye for this thread.

cheers

I very much doubt if any dealer, let alone any forum member is able to give you the advice you need. Very few people will have done the comparison which you need. Also you are going to live with the consequences of whatever decision you make for a long time to come.

This is one occassion when I could contact Naim direct and ask their advice.
