The same advice over and over?

Posted by: Jay on 09 December 2006

Ok. Something I'm beginning to notice a lot.

Someone posts a question and then you get 20 or so posts, from different people, repeating the same advice in slightly different ways. Very rarely do they reference anyone else's contribution.

So how come?

Are we too lazy?
Do we just want to say something, don't care what it is?
Are we trying to get to the magic 1000 posts and this appears the easiest and path of least resistance?
Do you not read the replies and only the original question?

Come on what is it?

Or is it just me?

No points for the smart arse that repeats the first reply. I'm well ahead of ya Winker

I just hate it when the forum "Swat" quotes every line in your post, bit by bit, usually out of context, call you a twat, and demands that YOU answer each and every one of HIS tedious questions........

Ok.

Anacranaim, probably based on sloppy spelling, meaning All (orl) correct (korrect). I dislike this sloppy use of the English language (and therefore you) and entirely disagree with your point of view on this apsect of your post. Where did you get your facts, Woolworths?. And don't respond with a simple yes/no, I want to know EXACTLY what you had in mind when you incorporated this grotesque concept into your obnoxious post.

Hallelulia. At last you've begun to notice SOMETHING. But what EXACTLY have you noticed this time. Don't waffle on about how people don't seem to read other people's contributions. That's simply not true. I could connect you to X to the power of N www. links to prove my point. Come on, I need a response NOW, not next week .

What did you you expect, this is a public forum. People DO post questions from time to time. This is such a beeding obvious statement that it clearly proves that you are a total moron.

Not if its one of Berlin Fritz's posts. Sure he gets 20 or more responses, but they're all from the same person, hinself. So clearly you are wrong in what you have tried to claim. Further proof, as if it were needed, of your moronic status.

Ok, I agree with you on this point, but not on any of your others, specifically the first, about the use of "OK"

Why should they? Show me recent examples of where it would be ENTIRELY appropriate for someone to have referenced EVERYBODY's contribution, but where they failed to do so. Just ONE example will do. You see? you can't.

Jay,

Seriously, it is NOT personal. I do find the above type of response tedious. Apologies for using your post as an example.

If it makes you feel at all uncomfortable, either I will delete it or I won't be at all offended if Adam does.

Cheers

I can see we're not taking this extremely serious matter, seriously.

We seriously need to review the behaviour of forum members.

I suggest...we put to vote the motion that if members post "equivalent advice"* then they should be asked to retract that advice within a pre-specified time period. Failure to do so will require the member to use an equipment stand NOT recommended by the majority of members (an official NOT recommended equipment stand list will be posted every week) for a period of not less than 1 month (to ensure said stand has burned in correctly).

We need more rules. We need to look after those not so intelligent and powerful as ourselves in order to protect them from hurting themselves and obviously maintaining what semblance of superiority we have.

The fact of it is this is a hifi manufacturers forum, diversity is not on the cards.

100 people will ask if adding a hicap is a good idea, 100 people will say yes.

It is tedious, but usually observed by the hardened forum goer not the new ones, who it would appear do not wish to use the search facility.

Quoting entire posts is f**king annoying and assumes every one is to stupid to put things in context, why not simply state the persons name you are referring to instead of quoting their entire post?
Posted on: 10 December 2006 by joe90
I post the same advice all the time.

Usually because it's GOOD advice.

Some people post the same BAD advice all the time becuase they have no idea what they're talking about.

In defence of my arrogance I never complain about my system, and I know exactly what I'm going to buy next.

This game is only as difficult as you make it - and Naim have made it very simple.

Just join the dots and listen for the music...

Notice how many have deviated from the path at their peril.

Truly a quaint thread!

Posting a question - fairly normal - though I have never, ever, done it...

Not referencing other replies, which one thinks are fatuous - completely normal...

New members failing to use the search engine - totally to be expected. In fact I find it hard work to employ this, as it is random at best in finding the clues one is looking for.

As for any person here being a Moron, Cretin, Fool, or even a Deviant, is surely to carry it too far! The [frequently, even in my own case], posts of people who cannot proof-read is no reason to assume a small score in common sense or IQ!

The trouble is that sometimes people do forget that good advice is likely to be quite similar, though I cannot wholely fall in Joe [90]'s camp in suggesting the only solution is only ever a totally Naim based answer. For example I cannot find it quite in my heart to think that the Fraim beats what I have, even though according to him [Joe] I would no longer have the Naim sound: True, but for me I have a rather musical one, which is [in terms of cost] at least 90 per centum Naim based... [and think of those still using Hutter, which is what Naim themselves used before they brought out the Fraim - is that Kosher Naim, now?].

What I have always said is that the ears of the individual are more important than any advice here [even my wonderfully perfect words, type of Smiley]. I was hauled over the coals a few days ago for saying that I don't care about people who disagree with me. I don't, in the sense that I have no problem at all seeing that AN Other will have a different view - possibly at a Polar opposite to mine - but that neither position invalidates my view or his or hers! Any suggestion is a starting point for an audition rather than a cast iron rule! Be interested for sure, but sift like a flour-miller! Then decide and have a listen: It is why dealers exist! Then buy what pleases you, not what the glorious Forum recomends! [Don't audition at a dealer and then buy on eBay as that is certainly bad form].

I was taken to task by Paul G some time ago for stating the [bleeding] obvious, but then as he thought it was obvious, he surely should have been happy! It was clearly not obvious to the co-repertiteur...

So all I say is, "Live and let live!" No one should too upset to find themselves disagreed with, though certainly the times when personal abuse [wordy] are used are infinitely are smaller than the actual occurence of such phenomena!

Ok. Thread went off a little there.

I am referencing the same advice in the same thread....it's just slightly re-hashed by the next person who appears completely oblivious to what has been written before them.

No probs with folks asking the same questions time and time again.

Don's post is a joke, as in funny.

Dear Jay,

The trouble with internet humour is that it has to be read exactly as it is, and subtle humour can well fall flat or even seem abusive! Double readings are rather easy, unless one is always very clear!

Irony simply will not work without the natural intonation of the spoken voice, unless the author is a Chekov or Ibsen, and none here are of that calibre!

Dear Frank!

Keep me in the picture!

I f**king agree!
Posted on: 10 December 2006 by u5227470736789439
Dear Joe,

I made no 'quotation of the literate' in my first two posts here, and my use of the word 'referencing' may be seen as a kind of 'reference' to a preceding poster's use of the word in this way! Even though it is an Americanism, using a noun as a verb, which is certainly ugly as well as incorrect, I think it was reasonable in this context! I almost put it into inverted commas, and I wish I had, just for the out and out pedants of this world!

Regards from Fredrik
Posted on: 10 December 2006 by Deane F
Fredrik

"Referencing" is a transitive verb. It is not an Americanism; nor is it incorrect if used properly.

Posted on: 11 December 2006 by u5227470736789439
This place is splendid! I always say that I learn at least one thing every day, but I must admit that among all the pearls of wisdom of all the pedants here, I do eventually check what is said in a safe rerefence book!

Deane is correct: 'reference: n[oun] & v[erb] t[ransitive].' Oxford Dictionary.

All the best from Fredrik
