The same advice over and over?

Posted by: Jay on 09 December 2006

Ok. Something I'm beginning to notice a lot.

Someone posts a question and then you get 20 or so posts, from different people, repeating the same advice in slightly different ways. Very rarely do they reference anyone else's contribution.

So how come?

Are we too lazy?
Do we just want to say something, don't care what it is?
Are we trying to get to the magic 1000 posts and this appears the easiest and path of least resistance?
Do you not read the replies and only the original question?

Come on what is it?

Or is it just me?

No points for the smart arse that repeats the first reply. I'm well ahead of ya Winker

I'm no grammatician. I didn't know what a transitive verb was until I looked it up on the internet yesterday. It took me less than two minutes to find out that your usage was correct - all without having to move from my computer. joe90 might have done the same...

Dear Deane,

The trouble is that it is a long time since I had a real English lesson!

Actually thirty years, so that a bit of fading memory can lead me to doubt myself. On the other hand the big lesson is to remember that Joe is capable of talking nonsense! I had to have two knocks before I 'referenced' what I had once been taught! My English teacher also taught me Latin, so I may reasonably surmise that at least you will understand that the lessons were both totally correct and rather classically old fashioned. My memory remains, however, completely human, and fallible!

We are all fallible, even Fritz, though some seem more easily forgiven than others!

All the best from Fredrik

Well, it's at least as good as being aware of others' faults...

Dear Joe,

I am reminded by this of the words in the New Testamant about, "The beam in my eye and the mote in yours."

I am sure you are a better man than me... Fredrik
