Rage Against The Machine for Christmas No1
Posted by: bornwina on 09 December 2009
I heard yesterday the Rage Against The Machine facebook group are planning a big push to get 'Killing in the name of' to Christmas Number 1 in order to give Simon Cowell a good hard kick in the nuts. It received Radio 1 coverage yesterday
A worthy cause I hope you would agree - to support it simply download this track after December 13th.

Yes, but you failed to mention that this still makes them a long shot vs Simon & Co.

No way am I buying a record by RATM - after all they never buy any of mine.
Much as I dislike Simon C, I'd need a better excuse to buy a track than simply to keep him off the #1 slot. If the download was free that would be different.
Sorry, but they'd need to have chosen a track that had special something that would make me want to go out and pedestrianise the high street before I bought it.
Why didn't they choose a HMHB track, for example.

Zero chance I will buy RATM. Might buy Joe McElderry though if the family enjoy it. I agree with Diccus.

I have to say I do like Simon Cowell and I love the X Factor. Joe McElderry is marvellous and should win tonight. He was brilliant with George Michael and upstaged him TBH. Can't wait for tonight.
I would be very surprised if he doesn't win tonight and the Xmas #1 is not in question - mind you, one record I will pass on despite X Factor and American Idol being my guilty pleasures.
There is no one further up his own bottom when it comes to music than me but I feel NO guilt when it comes to X Factor. Family just love it. Its the only programme we watch together. We are ALL voting tonight
Come on JOE

ROTF,
Sorry to break this to you but I'm afraid HMHB are probably the worst trite ever to be put to record.
Miles & Naysayers
This is a bit of fun to see if people power can put a bit of life into what has become over recent years a woeful excuse for a chart. Though I know Christmas is usually a daft time for music but what better time to do it and there are many donations going to Shelter so its a win win win as I said earlier.
I'm buying 10 copies so ner!!!

We are just pulling your chain a little, hey, if it was the Dylan Christmas CD even I would have taken part in it.

Bestest first post ever.
However, This should be Number 1. Just for the great song title - although the music is great too.

Well done Joe

Well each to his own Dean - I just like good song writing rather than noise. I can't help it, I just don't like 80/90s style music like RATM. The few tracks I've heard by them meant no more to me than those created by Simon C. So X-Factor or RATM .... it means nothing to me. Napalm Death seems to have a point and they spawned Cathedral who were rather good, but the others who copied Napalm Death seemed to have missed the point.quote:Originally posted by Whizzkid:quote:Originally posted by ROTF:

Of course, my taste is governed by listening. I don't like dance or enjoy dancing. So music written for the dance floor is not really music that resonates with me. That it moves others is fine.
You can't really describe a band as good and honest as HMHB as trite. John Peel described HMHB as a national treasure and they were the most request band in the history of his show. They tend to describe life through humorous commentary rather than anger. Perhaps that is the appeal -it's life Dean in the way that I know it; I know more about daytime television and Trumptonshire than I do about ....... well whatever it is RATM are singing about.
So can we agree to differ on this, please .... I've no desire to evangelise the best band I've ever heard.
My main point is that if the desire was to beat Simon C then they needed to choose a better song than the one they did. There are many that fulfil this criterion and not just the entire HMHB catalogue.
40 years ago Two Little Boys by the wonderful Rolf Harris was at the top - now I'd have bought that if I didn't already have it

Perhaps RATM and RATM fans should remember It's clichéd to be cynical at Christmas.

He got it right then - always reminds me of Kenny Dalglish's comment about the secret of winning the league - you need to get more points than the other teams.quote:Originally posted by MilesSmiles:

Trite is probably the wrong word I'll think of a better one soon. Though because of your enthusiasm for HMHB I investigated their work and well I have to agree to disagree about the quality of their songwriting but just to say I will not be buying any of their albums.
Now RATM for Christmas #1 was probably picked for impact as much as anything else but the core sentiment I agree with. This modern pop machine which has brought in the sheep mentality when it comes to music needs to be challenged and if this is the only way to wake up England musically then so be it. I'll be spending Christmas with my two nephew's and one is a DJ on a pirate radio station that plays underground dance music and I like to think I have a certain influence on this and I'm so proud and glad he has chosen this as hobby and pertential career and I shall encourage him at every opportunity. We need more diversity not less many of the musical pioneers in the sixties hopefully are happy that this is happening and I thought you of all people ROTF, being steeped in the one genre that is about sticking it to the man, would see this as a good thing.
PEACE, LOVE & PROTEST

I think many people are missing the point here ....whether you like RATM or not isn't really the point (I guess it could have been HMHB ROTF!) ..for good or for ill it's their track that has been chosen for people to get behind AND because of the relevancy of it's repeated closing refrain....(sorry if the language offends anyone)
.. F**K YOU I WON'T DO WHAT YOU TELL ME!
IMHO it's a noble cause ...buy the single and (if you can) give a donation to SHELTER as well as suggested by the organisers)

Here's the link to the play.com website, only .65p

I'm not sure why the debate is whether it should HMHB or RATM - is it because they are both 4 letter abbreviations?
The point of the campaign is you either want to stick one up the loathsome Cowell and all he stands for (and yes, I know, manufactured bands since the beginning of time etc etc) or you don't.

Why does everyone hate Simon Cowell so much.
He's only doing his job
As for RATM, i think they are jumped up angry young men....

No debate really .. I'd buy a good song (HMHB), but not interested in buying a song I don't like (RATM) ... strangely I don't buy music I don't like, not even to upset other peoplequote:I'm not sure why the debate is whether it should HMHB or RATM - is it because they are both 4 letter abbreviations?
I don't want to stick one up anybody .... just ignore Simon C is my tactic
I guess I come from the age before manufactured bands ... here is real music from my era
