Guitar combo suggestions
Posted by: Earwicker on 13 February 2006
I'm after a guitar combo with enough poke for a pub gig in the £200 - £250 region. Got a LP Custom, will soon have a Strat too, play blues/Jazz, MUST have good clean channel...
Shortlised the usual suspects from Fender and Crate... what do you think?
Thanks,
EW

The amp for you with that spec is surely a Mesa Boogie, but that's way out of the budget. You're going to have trouble with a Strat AND a Les Paul to play blues AND jazz AND have a great clean channel. Something is going to have to give. Especially for that budget.

The Fender 212R is an option, but I gather the overdrive is crap. It's bloody cheap though and I gather it goes LOUD.
I also like the look of the Crate GT212, and there's always the latest version of the Peavey 112 Bandit.
Any other ideas???

..I'll stretch to £350 if it's worth it!

Personally I'd go for a Fender if you want a great clean sound. I use a Champion 30 with a Clapton Strat and that's loud enough to take your head off. The Clapton Strat mid-band boost is supposed to emulate a Humbucker, so it would be worth trying with the Les Paul. As for the overdrive, I use a Boss OD-3. If the 30W isn't loud enough for you, there's probably a 50W to try.

Thanks Dave, that's looks better than some of the stuff I've been considering!
I ought to pay more but I'm just thinking for the amount of use it's likely to get... I need some kind of a mullet setup that won't break the bank basically!

I'm particularly fond of my warm-sounding Vox AD50VT; a 1 x 12" speaker "modelling" amp, with several good sounds therein. I am able to nail Eric Claptons's sound on Fresh Cream using the "UK 80's" amp model (go figure) with a bit of 'verb, and this with a Strat. The Fender(s), Vox AC-15 and -30 emus are good too. I tend to play somewhat quietly, so if this ain't enough "poke" (I presume you mean volume), consider the AD100VT, which is a 2 x 12" speaker combo. All the amps in this series have a tube (not sure what sort) in the preamp section, which is probably why I like 'em.
Buy British!! (even if assembled in Korea, or wherever)
