DAC Strange noise USB

Posted by: Blakey on 09 May 2010

I just tried My new DAC with a HD wave file and at the end of the song there was at strange noise like very sharp hum. Anyone heard about that before? Is there something I should know?

THanks!

Yup.. I gathered that from the description. Only "hiccup" I've had with hires files has been from my htpc where the nDAC occasionally stutters when it changes from 44.1->96k. Off the USB, the couple I've tried have been perfect.

What spec are the USB sticks? If they are old or cheap, it's possible that they can't keep up with the streaming rate (USB sticks use all sorts of technology to have high densities at very low cost - sometimes at the expense of read speed).

2 brand new. 1 about 1 year old. 3 a few years old.

All are standard variety SanDisk, Geek Squad (who knows who makes it), Kingston and couple Pny's etc...

did a bunch more testing last night. Seems to happen with anything I can throw at it.

I dont think this is a file or USB stick issue unfortunately.

I will just stop using it until there is a firmware or other update.

I was VERY surprised there are only two of us experiencing this issue. Especially considering many are finding the USB input to be preferrable to others.

Maybe better to have your DAC checked.
If it is only just you two it is highly unlikely that it is firmware related. Especially since I know from my own experience that I have no issues whatsoever and that it just sounds wonderful.

DAMMIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would rather just not use it. I dont want to lose this thing for any substantial amount of time.

I am not planning on using the input anyway. I just wanted to try it out to compare to other sources. Then when this started happening I got caught up in it.
