Allae vs ProAc Tablette 2000 Signatures

Posted by: Robert Howell on 08 May 2003

Hi all,

I've recently had the chance to listen to a pair of Allaes on the end of a NAP150 and a NAC112, fed by a Roskan CD player. My home system consists of the above Signatures fed by ols NAC62/NAP90, via a Marantz 63 MkII Signature source.

During the demo of the Allae, I found the imaging poor compared to my Tablettes - particularly the high treble. Some people say Naim systems can't image, which I really think must be nonsense, but something wasn't quite right with the Allae. Should a £900 pair of Tablettes turn in better imaging that a £2000 pair of Allae? My only thought is that the Signatures have a tweeter very similar (the same?) as the SL2 and above, which is presumably a high spec than that in the Allae. Does anyone else out there have any thoughts on this?

The mid base and lower was eceptional on the Allae and much better than the Tablettes which in comparison sound wooly. Does anyone else have this relatively wooly base from their Signatures and if so, do you have any ideas what would improve them?

Here ends my first post!

Cheers,

Rob.

I'm not sure but i believe that the Tablettes respond nicely to more power, maybe a nap140?

The Allae has a much wider front than the Tablettes. In my recent speaker shootout at home, the width of the speaker front related directly to the ability of the speaker to throw a wide soundstage.

The Allaes, which I bought, image just fine but to get a large soundstage need to be placed farther apart.

I've owned ProAcs for several years and auditioned the line several times - of ProAc speakers, I liked the Tablette 2000 the least Frown Seems to have wooly, boomy as-in-made-for-home-theatre bass to me.

Robert,

I think the issue is with the source and not the speakers. Keep you proac's and improve your source.
