Got my QS Ref...

Posted by: Tony L on 29 October 2001

Larry and Dave C brought my new QS Reference across and set it up on Saturday. It’s a black one with silver 100mm tubes, it is not the forthcoming Dave Cattlin-ised "bog seat" version, though I will get the shelf the CDX sits on done later. I currently have the rack stacked from the top down: P9, CDX, space awaiting Tom Evans Microgroove, Nait 2, P9 PSU.

I had recently been running my CDX and Nait 2 on the floor (a wooden laminate), after I sold the last of the Mana (except the spirit level, I'm definitely keeping that!). Whilst placing myself at serious risk of invoking a Mana Jihad, my view on said angle iron is that it does a lot of things very well, but one thing profoundly wrong:- Pitch. Placing the gear on the floor obviously lost out on the things that Mana does really well (detail, slam, dynamics), but conclusively fixed the note pitch problem, so the system was back really making music, it was playing tunes properly, though with less finesse at the hi-fi aspects. Installing the QS Reference brought back the hi-fi aspects I had enjoyed with the Mana without paying the musical price. The timing sounds very natural, it is neither too fast or too slow.

The "non-ferrous" thing is now really evident too, bringing any large chunks of metal near the system will adversely affect its performance quite noticeably. Purely by chance I own a very non-metallic turntable, so its presence does not affect the system that much. The only ferrous bits of a P9 I could find are the centre spindle and the screws that hold the motor in, there are other areas made of metal such as the arm and inner platter, but compared to most decks it is really good in this respect being wooden in construction with a ceramic platter. The Tom Evans Microgroove phono stage I plan to buy very soon is similarly non-metallic in construction - it looks quite like a DNM.

I have not yet played with tweaking the QS setup, though read on a different thread that there is some mileage in how tight the tubes should be done up. Larry said do 'em pretty tight, so as he did them I'm leaving well alone for a while.

Tony.

Dave,

good point, it might have been this, but the effect was very large.

I will have to undertake further testing. The conclusive test for me would be placing the Linn next to the rack instead of on it. Must try this next time I get the chance.

Thanks Martin,

Let me know what happens, I'm really curious about this NF thing. It's hard to believe the proximity of surrounding ferrous stand metal would affect the component (with its vast amount of ferrous materials internally) but Stallion presents a good argument with the concept of "potential performance limitations vs. a contradiction". (Must think out of the box... good one Stallion)

Another piece of evidence.... Naim's admission in the Fraim brochure and as most of believe, since when does Naim do something for the sake of "doing something".... never in my experience;)

dave

P.S. AF/base exposes DIN centering unlike any other stand (that I've tried) except the Fraim. I forgot to mention that in my e-mail. Very worthwhile with AF if you haven't tried it (plug centering).

Jeez Steve, I was going to let you puzzle this one out for a few more days to see how many more permutations you could come up with... but then I guess Alanis' phone would have reached overload, so...

quote:
Please don't do a racist witch hunt on me. Being "antipodean" is a reference to the degrees longitude and latitude James has provided in his profile. How can that be construed as racist - unless you are deliberately trying to cause trouble... ?

I assume that was meant with a large dose of irony - looking at the content of your posts during the last few months, there are very few that are less than inflamatory - and you have the gall to suggest that I might be attempting to cause trouble? No Steve, you are clearly mistaken. I am not arguing the point of political correctness, and if you had read some of my contributions to past discussions of PC-riddled subjects (such as sexism) you would know that it is clearly not my style.
No, as I acurately pointed out in my post, your post might easily be misconstrued as offensive. This is trouble-making? Little imagination is required to see your remark as offensive, and I see your suggestion as mere deflection.

quote:
"Antipodean" can apply to the inhabitants of either New Zealand or Australia, where the majority of the inhabitants are of the same racial origin as myself.

Steve, have you read statistical data to back this assertion up?

quote:
So what is wrong with making geographical references?
They may not be stricly relevant to the topic in hand, but they hardly warrant a deletion or a ban.
I refered to the geographical location out of acknowledgement of his style in stating his whereabouts, not to the location itself.

We all know already that James is from the Antipodes, as are many other forum posters - myself included... as this is common knowledge it appears you were attempting to gain milage in delineating the cultural background in what can be read as a somewhat derogatory post. Yours was not clearly tagged as a geographical reference, and hence can be read as a cultural reference also.

As Mr Ellis-Jones rightly points out, the Antipodean context of walking on ones hands is a little hurtful, for the least reason - I can't do it!

Perhaps the more modern "Australasian" would be more appropriate? <looks over top of glasses>

quote:
My suggestion to use email was made because Tony's opinion was sought, and I was criticised for giving my own opinion on this public forum ahead of him. The suggestion to email a person dirctly in order to invite a response from one specific individual to the exclusion of others, was kind of obvious really!

Obvious to you perhaps, but certainly out of order in this context. I suspect your nose was a little disjointed, judging by the curtness of your reply - or did the smilies just obscure the meaning?

quote:
otherwise we are all going to be constantly living in fear of such unnecessary deletions/exclusions, when we make contributions on this forum for the purpose of our mutual entertainment.

You mean like 70% of my posts, or 90-odd% of yours?

I can say with honesty, that today is a seriously beautiful day for it!

You choose to exorcise your demons on this thread for some reason (?)

I think if you go into my profile and view my recent postings you will find that you have more than blown this out of proportion.
Moreover, in your above posting, you succeed in attacking the person (me) behind the viewpoints I express, whilst not even bothering to challenge the latter.

I genuinely meant no offence to James, and most people can see that.
As to the actual ethnic mix of Australasia, or whatever PC name (I prefer Oceania, BTW) you may wish to give that part of the world, I really couldn't care less, as it is completely irrelevant anyway.
So, kindly stop blowing your PC whistle, cut the personal attacks - I mean real ones where you say that virtually all my postings are inflammatory, as opposed to what I do say here, where I try to speak as I find and have a little fun along the way, challenge the viewpoint, and not attack the person behind it - unless someone launches a personal attack on me first - like you have!

Twisting them maliciously out of context, it is possible to present some of my postings as being inflammatory.

As for inflammatory, read your posting above.
I now welcome something constructive from you to this thread.

Enjoy your day.
Steve.

PS: Let's not allow this to descend into another slanging match, because I'm just not in the mood. roll eyes

James, you are keeping silent. If you found my original reply to your criticism of my logic, inflammatory, please let me know by email. smile

Nothing wrong with that, surely?
It is obviously a geographical reference, and not a cultural one.

Nice pic from Rico, and you are at the same level of latitude (in November) as I was when I was when I was in Tashkent in May of this year, (41 degrees also) so the sun must at the exact same angle at its midday zenith as it was for me back then.

Mr Toy

You are clearly hyper-sensitive if you regard my pointing out how offensive your statements are, as a personal atack.

quote:
As for inflammatory, read your posting above.
I now welcome something constructive from you to this thread.

You are welcome. You will find that my posts above have been particularly constructive, and I politely pointed out that your comments would easily prove offensive. In a very polite and constructive manner, I will add. Now you persist in banging on and on labouring your point, and attempting deflection on the "oh this is a personal attack, help me, he's nasty"... please, Mr toy, give it a rest. Can you not accept gracefully your social faux pas?
As for PC - as I explained before, I am not PC and nor is my argument.

Exorcising demons? Oh man, please let us know what you're on, it sounds like fun - is it legal?

Mr Toy, I do not accept that.

quote:
I genuinely meant no offence to James, and most people can see that.

Again, that is not the point I am making, and is peripheral to the argument. Please! Pay attention!

quote:
As to the actual ethnic mix of Australasia, or whatever PC name (I prefer Oceania, BTW) you may wish to give that part of the world, I really couldn't care less, as it is completely irrelevant anyway.

Mr Toy, you bought up that in your argument... and now you dismiss it as something you couldn't care less about.

This really does not warrant response.

I am heartened at least that you would defend to the death my right to my own opinion - as I would do for you. That's something I'll go discuss with Alanis. BTW Mr Toy, - your comments are offensive, as is (and this folks, is the personal part) - your manner. eek

You've said something, someone's pointed out that you've perhaps overstepped the mark in a polite and constructive fashion, you've argued with them, continued to argue with them... told them to basically sod off and not point the finger at you... I find that somewhat outlandish on this forum. Anyone else care to comment?

confused
Who is this Alanis person, anyway?
I meant no offence, and non taken, but I'm definitely not the one with the twisted knickers! wink
Be a friend of Vuk, by all means!
As long as he doesn't come back to issue more threats, bully those who don't agree with him, and get his mates to follow up his venom in his absence, then I for one would like to see him back on this forum.
I was not the one who asked for him to be banned from here in the first place, and I'm also not the one in a position to summon his return...
For the record, I'd never support a permanent ban on anyone, but that decision isn't mine either.
I will simply offer no support for those who cannot exercise self control here - and not be able to apologise/make any other kind of concession for such a lack afterwards...
I can only apologise for any offence I may have caused to anyone, in the hope that tokenist alliances do not gather momentum in protecting the guilty.

Why do you persist in criticising Vuk who is unable to answer back. It really is a bloody awful trait and it is cowardly.

...when the forum's biosphere gets messed with. If all organisms are allowed to evolve naturally, all organisms benefit.

I'm quite sure that everybody has, from time to time posted something which, in retrospect, was ill-advised. Since this is a written, rather than spoken medium, any aberrations stand out as such for all, including the author, to see; even, crucially, after the event. Errors become more obvious and can be corrected. Deletion of either people or posts removes this benefit, and impedes the natural balance of the medium.

Thus, with no V, and no B, the waters are cloudy with krill.

Alex;

Yes, perhaps it was an unfortunate analogy. I blame it on the inconvenience of having to maintain a spreadsheet just to keep track of the shifting usernames around here.

I must admit, though that I find the practice of "boybanding" in support of Vuk splendidly ironic -- I'm sure it's appreciated.

BTW, is there any truth in the rumour that Vuk has landed the role of Lord of the Nazgul in the forthcoming LOTR movie? That JW is playing Sauron is obviously old news, but I also understand that Stephen Toy has been shortlisted for Pippin, and Mick Parry as a reluctant Sam Gamgee. The outcome of "Stallion"'s application for Gwaihir the Windlord is in the balance, apparently.

Oh, and "signiature"...? Humph.

I'm not attacking Vuk here, I'm defending myself from his new crowd of Naimsakes who are in a position to answer back.

Now, some of the abovementioned are getting personal, and there really is no need for it. frown

Mick,
Yours is a valid point, and shall refrain from attacking Vuk and his posse - more his posse now than Vuk himself, when they learn to leave out the personal attacks and sniping.

I haven't been in the hi-fi game for very long - the point of contention I had with James which started this little saga off... and I believe neither has Mike Hanson, but that is as irrelevant as anyone's geographical location. Two wrongs don't make a right, I know.
However, the cronyism we are now seeing here is most undesirable.

Mr. Stephenson,
Please let Vuk back in for heaven's sake, so that things can really get back to normal. Until you do, I shall continue to act as the scapegoat/whipping boy here! wink

Mr Toy
This is not a Vuk thread, nor is mine a Vuk argument.

You are mistaken. You have offended me - and you breezily twist from one half-excuse or half-argument to the next. You are now attempting to deflect this and write it off as a Vuk-vendetta.

You are happy, and indeed appeased, when some agree with points you make on this forum. When somebody disagrees, or points out a slip, you carefully moan that it is a personal attack, and to lay off. This is most tiresome, and clouds flow of discussion - if only for its persistance and repetition (as I am now doggedly delineating in the same fashion).

And I agree with the others in this thread, and on others - your repeated attacks/snipes/digs/jibes at Vuk, when he cannot respond, can only be seen as exceptionally poor sportsmanship.

Arse.
