The Cutty Sark

If, as is suspected currently, it turns out that the fire on the Cutty Sark, was caused by arson, I think the perpertrators should be locked up and left to rot, and all their belongings and assets sold for reparation costs. Bloody shameful.

Dear Howard,
My proposition was to build "new copies" of these ancient vessels, perhaps even adding some [invisible] extra safety features, so that they could be real working exhibits, rather than like the poor Cutty Sark, more or less a beached whale...

I must admit that does sound like a good idea. Although there is some thing about an original that gives off a vibe.
Would for instance replicas of the Elgin Marbles or Tuts mask have the same aura?
As an aside apparently most of Victory has been replaced over the years.
It would seem that Cutty Sark would fall into that category too after the restoration, with that amount of spend I would have though it could be a working boat then.

Dear Howard,
I would obviously keep the originals...
But would it not be nice at important Nation Sea-born events to have had such as the Great Britain [copy] steaming with a naval flotila, or the Cuty Sark at some Yatch race...
It would be a TV spectacle for the whole World! Good Publicity for UK PLC, and something to remind us of our rather significant maritime history. Something we could all be proud of!

A real shame, however caused. I imagine it was a pretty combustible mixture. Perhaps a modern sprinkler system would have been too obtrusive??
I hope nobody has been hurt.
Anyone intrested in these things would do well to read 'The Last Grain Race' by Eric Newby for a taste of the last days of sail.

Thanks Bruce. I'll seek that out.

Why don't they scavenge the bits off the Carrick to fix the Cutty Sark?

its a wreck Bob, its been neglected for 15 years. they just rot away as its an iron frame clad with wood.
it used to be a gentelmans club on the Clyde, very posh. it sank a couple of times whilst moored + then i guess the maintenance bill was too much so they took her down to Irvine
