hello all, does anyone use the higher hertz setting and can you hear the differences?
i have tried the same song in both and can hear the very last transient edges decay go further.
or am i just enjoying the fact i have exceptional hearing.

ALL of my 24 bits files are 96khz. SO i cannot comment on the 24/44.
All i know is that as long as the extra bandwidth is there, I might as well use it.
iTunes cannot pass thru 96 can it?

PC, i believe it maybe able to. i am on PC not mac. itunes uses quicktime and in quicktime preferences there are settings for 24/44.1, 24/96 & 24/192. the only limiting factor for me is the realtek midi driver which only goes up to 24/96.
i got the setting from here: http://www.benchmarkmedia.com/wiki/index.php/Windows_Vi...ayback_-_Setup_Guide

If not, I am glad you have figured out what the "best" option is.
Itunes and a wireless router??? OOOOOooooo impressive.

sorry PC but your wrong Foobar is crap IMHO. i tried it 2 years ago and i have just tried the latest version 30 mins ago, it not much better than it was before. ill stick with itunes/aiport express for now thanks. airfoil is another great patch, it lets you use any media player via an airport express.

No ASIO, Kernal streaming or setup plugins allowed, LOL. It's a steep hill PC. Makes you wonder why differences aren't heard, don't it?
I thought Itunes could do 96 direct but not to an AE.
To the op, I even prefer 96 to 88 but things don't seem to change much there after. Could be system related but there you go.

does anyone now where i can find the digital optical out specs for the airport express? i know the dacs analogue out is a BB 16/44.1 bit chipset but cant see anything else mentioned.

great review, as i suspected, the dacs crap but digital out is bit perfect.
from what i could see the limiting factor of the optical side was within itunes which now has output settings upto 24/192.

You may want to search the forum. Those that use Itunes tend to prefer 24 bit but the sample rate set to the same as is native to the source material. Otherwise and it will get up or downsampled to your selected sample rate and can not be bit perfect.

js, i have my sample rate set to 96, sounds wonderful. i have also tried 44.1 which sounds a tiny tiny tiny bit flatter - but im still playing with that one. cant decide which setting is better 44.1 sound dryer to me.
from what i've read on forums reviews, i came to understand the extra bandwidth didnt change existing 44.1, it just ment that if there is a higher recording then it gets played correctly!?!

If you are using an AE then it doesn't matter what you have the audio output set at - it'll only pass 16/44.1.

16/44 lossless.
Posted on: 23 February 2009 by spacey
itnues only does 16/44, it cant play anything higher. i assume this is why the AE plays the same. my questions are about getting a perfect steam out of the hardware and into itunes.
my musics on a NAS then sent to the AE wirelessly. the computer just serves up the tunes how much is the computer actually involved in the music making process. my system is: supernait/neat momentum 3i/target R2 stands/NACA5/VDH optical/airport express/netgear SC101T NAS & DG834N router/dedicated tecra M9 laptop/itunes.
sounds stunning. i got the NAS for Xmas and it made a huge difference to the way it works and sounds.
my old NAS was a just an £80 cheepo to get a flava of what i wanted/needed and at the time i was a bit green about these things.....
i have tried a HP laptop directly wired via optical out. sounds exactly the same to me. can macs really sound different? if so i dont see why NAS's cant!?!

where did you get you files from and what format were they in, have you converted them to apple lossless?

you can download a free program called xACT, for flac to apple lossless conversion on a Mac, I'm sure there is something similar for PC. Just thought I would post that incase any Mac people were wondering same (coverting flac files to lossless)
cheers

R-tee - it was a few months back but i think i used Max - they were FLAC files from the Linn site and it converted them to AIFF. Worth taking a look on thw Linn site as there are some good faqs on playing 24/96 files.
James
PS - I dont use lossless - storage is cheap and i prefer the processor to be doing as little work as possible when playing music.

Full artwork and tagging with AIFF, unlike WAV.

r-tee,
from my experience, given an audio file, increasing the sample rate setting in conversion or play mode will not increase the perceived quality of the audio.
Obviously a different matter if comparing audio files with different sample rates; in this case, if the system playing the file is adequate, the perceived quality difference can be heard.
Have played flac 16/44, 24/96 and 24/192 versions of the same music and the difference between the above is absolutely there, but without particular sample rate settings in play mode.

hi sbilotta, are you saying that 24/192 sounds better then 16/44, even is the audio out put if set at 16/44?
Posted on: 26 February 2009 by sbilotta
no r-tee, not talking about any kind of up or down sampling but simple "native" audio file sample rate.
Can't get into the specifics of your system / applications as I do not use PC or Mac systems to play my files, but enjoy comparing and hearing the differences between audio files with different bit and sample rates.

so how do you play your file if not with PC or MAC?
