PS Audio "TagnPlay"
Posted by: Geoff P on 01 September 2010
Folks PS Audio has just released a UPnP /Media Control point / player app for i-Pod / i-Phone.
I have just installed it for a miserly 7.99 Euro and it works great on my Linn DS. It has a colorfull easy to setup interface and a nice feature or two including an 'info' symbol which brings up a potted bio of the artist whose music it is playing.
PS Audio claim on their web site it will work with Naim so maybe worth checking out.
Regards

yes, I saw that - how do you think it compares with ChorusDS? I'm using the HD version on iPad, and I like the idea of having additional artist info not embedded in the tag

I have only just started using it. You need to like PS Audio's blue colorscheme but the info is quite interesting stuff and is in a font size that my old eyes can read OK.
The Radio function also works nicely, fast link to chosen station and a nice layout to the search menu for zooming in on the sort of music you want.
PS Audio has also started their own radio station called e-tracks which is already running with its own radio access button. If what they claim for it happens it will be pretty good by the sound of it (pun intended).
Quite impressed so far.

does anyone know if you can search the ENTIRE library with this? Or only loaded playlists?
I would just buy it, but I just bought the Rivermote for $10 and it was instantly deleted for the lack of search.
Also, how does it compare to the PlugPLayer app. Differences? Shortcomings? Improvements? etc...
Thanks in advance!

I have my music stored on a NAS in 40 folders by musical sub-type with something like 2000 CD's in them. This is managed by Asset media server.
TagnPlay finds all this and scrolls thru with the normal finger swipe on my i-pod touch. I have , against the norm, ripped tagged wave files. It has no trouble displaying album art from these files. No need for playlists
It also finds pretty much every potential file source alive on the network and reports all potential media players including the i-pod itself. You just pick which source and media payer you want it to talk with and you are up and running.
How does it compare to plugplayer? Well have been using PlugPLayer which works pretty well for me. TagnPlay is so far behaving well and is as easy to use as PlugPlayer and has this added 'Info bio' screen you can call up about the group whose music you are currently playing which I think quite nice.
The Radio function is looking pretty good, something that PlugPLayer doesn't have, and probably excellent for the US since that where PS Audio is. Still learning my way round it vut haven't found a radio station search function I like yet.
I reckon it should work fine for you Patrick.

It is indeed PlugPlayer heavily modified on the UI side (but if you look closely you can find small and not so small similarities), and with some new interesting functionality, some of which:
- info on artists from lastfm.
- a good selection of internet radio to play on the renderer
- ability to play FLAC and Ogg Vorbis stored on the local iDevice
- favorites management
Search is the same as PlugPlayer: it uses UPnP search and ask the server for the list of albums containing the search string.
It's a well done app although the blue look is not very original and list of items are done better in PlugPlayer. Some screens and icons are a bit cheesy IMHO.

Thanks Geoff and Bubbles....
If it is basically the PlugPlayer with a different face and LastFM bios, I think I will pass.
I have PlugPlayer now and I have a hard time with how it displays the Media Library.
When you go into "Artists" and click on one, it doesn't just bring up the album, it also loads up EVERY track. It makes the list cluttered and hard to find an album.
Ill just stick with the Remote app for as long as it works.
Thanks again for the clarifications.

Bubbleguuum,
Is there a problem a with Foobar Renderer playing via ASIO output?
For some reason I cannot get my Foobar to NOT transcode to MP3. I have the exact same UPNP settings as another Foobar (which outputs via DS) which appears to correctly pass on the lossless unfettered.
Thanks so much!

Patrick. You made the right decision based on my experience today.
Set up with TagnPlay id very easy and I had no problem streaming iTunes playlists via Asset UpNp to my Uniti.
Internet radio, however, was a disappointing experience ( and was a feature which attracted me to TagnPlay ). It found the BBC stations OK but, even though I added them to my Favourites according to the Help instructions, I could never find them in Favourites ! Even worse, trying to listen to internet radio stations from Russia resulted in a total freeze and only a reboot of the iPhone cured the problem. I even had to reset my router to avoid dropouts while listening to the Proms on BBC Radio 3 !!
Maybe the fault lies in my 3G iPhone using OS4 (very slow) but, frankly, I can no longer be bothered. So it's Apple Airport Express via Remote and iRadio via the Uniti and Ethernet from now on - or until something much better is introduced.

Or perhaps it is just a freakishly large iPhone!

I downloaded this last night. Very neat indeed and a nice touch (no pun intended !) with the info screen too. I'm using it with Chorus DS now instead of Twonky as my library is iTunes managed. Twonky doesnt display all the meta data correctly and no album art whereas Chorus just worked first time.

Chorus is my other favorite on my i-pod. I especially like the quick links to Linn Radio.
Presumably the i-pad version has a bigger display area?

Bigger and faster. Seamless integration and a really nice user interface.
