Thoughts on a CD Storage rack?

Posted by: Mr_Sukebe on 04 July 2002

Guys,

Has anyone seen what they consider to be a fairly tasteful CD rack at non-loony prices?

Over the last year, I've looked at all sorts of racks, and have found:
- Cheap and nasty plastic ones
- Expensive and nasty ones
- Tasteful looking and very expensive ones made of wood and glass.
- Saw one recently that was apparently finished in aluminium, but looked and felt like it was made of silvered plastic and cost a fortune

Unforunately, NON of the above are capable of holding more than about 300 CDs. I'd like something to hold 500-600 CDs

The best idea I've seen would be something like think bookshelf, maybe 6 feet high, 30inches wide, hopefully finished in beach.

Got any ideas or seen anything suitable?

Hi,

I make bookcase like Cd racks out of beech with glass shelves to hold 500 or 1000 CDs. I can send you some pics if you are interested (just can't get them small enough to post here)

I've use Benno (I think it's benno )cd racks from Ikea - for that modernist industrial look - £10 - each one holds 100 CDs, I've got eleven of them.

Dev,
don't mean to shock you but Benno actually holds 180 single cds... and I *only* have 3 of them smile

Ikea Billy range.

Check out the profile for the smaller one, but there is one twice as High which I estimate will hold 800 cds.

This one cost 30 quid for the basic unit and a further 12 quid each for the CD inserts of which there are three.

Good stuff.

There was a thread about cd storage about 6 months ago.

Several people posted pictures of their cd racks.

The cheapest solution for bulk cds was the Ikea billy which is a standard 2m bookshelf with CD storage inserts. The inserts are half shelves with false backs which can be placed on the bookshelves. A fully kitted rack holds 700+ cds and costs under 100ukp in Singapore.

Several people didn't like the looks of it, but have a look at the pictures yourself. I thought they look ok and are good value for money. Most racks I have seen here cost over 1sgd/cd whereas these racks were about 0.3sgd/cd.

You could always just get the inserts (or build your own) for an existing cupboard.

Thanks for the feedback guys, some useful ideas.

Still haven't decided on the prefered option. One of those links was to a US website, which could make trying to aquire the unit rather difficult.

Hello Mr Sukebe,

Funnily enough, as you were so kind to write in to my thread, now I have the opportunity to make a small contibution in return.

Personal taste always comes into everything, but I too am 'shopping' for some CD storage, and the one that stands out IMHO is the Billy, for pratical and aesthetic reasons. It's available in beech, and real wood veneer at that, the shelves each have a rating of 30Kg with the 80cm width, and 22kg load with the 60cm width unit. Also wood or glass shelves. The bit I thought you might be interested in that hasn't been mentioned, is that you can also get it with full length glass doors, neatly taking care of the dust situation, and improving its looks. There is an Ikea web site in the UK, where one can peruse and find out details of their range.

Good Luck,

Cheerio,

John. smile

Thanks again for more feedback.

I've looked at the Ikea "Billy" option, c/w it's inserts.
The good news is that the style would be fine, price is cheap and it would store adequate amounts.
The bad news is that it's just too deep. If you check out the inserts, they only take up 50% of the depth.
The optimum option right now would be a half-depth "billy" with inserts.

The inserts are only intended to make it so the cd fits perfect. If you had a CD rack exactly the depth of a CD then it would probably fall over!

Also you get a nice secret stash type place just incase you are a dealer or something.

I saw another unit at Ikea a few months ago called admirall (or similar). It is a 4 shelf stackable unit. It is half depth so cd's fit in perfectly but if you were to stack them you'd need to bolt them to the wall.

It is slightly more expensive than the billy, but as a bonus the shelves are just high enough to fit dvd's. From memory each unit holds 440 cds or 300 odd dvds.

I use an IKEA shelf which is exactly CD sized and holds 5 x 20 CDs per shelf, can't remember the name. £19 each, I have four (i.e. 400 CDs) so far, looks great, easy to put up on wall etc. Quite thick, nicely veneered (maple) chipboard. Definitely holds 100 CDs so not Benno if that's 180.

Another alternative is the 'professional' style racks advertised in some music and hifi mags. Maximise space but look a bit metallic.

PS Just worked out the Benno confusion. There is a horizontal Benno shelf (of which I have as yet 4) which holds 100 and costs £19. There is also a vertical Benno tower (which holds 180 and costs £35 in wood finish). Get the shelves. They look very discreet.

The tall version is the same height as the Billy bookcase, but half the depth. It has roughly the same footprint as a CD jewel case, the photo's in the catalogue always show the front edge level with the Billy bookcase, but in fact there is a a gap at the back.

I use some Ikea stuff, I think it's 'Billy'. It is certainly by far the cheapest solution I have found to house a reasonable sized CD collection. The majority of CD storage solutions are stupidly expensive if you have more than say 500 CDs (I have over twice that). This shelving cost about 220 quid when I bought it just over a year ago.

Did I dream this or weren't Naim talking about bringing something out to match the Fraim?

Not sure whether they still do it, but I got my CD rack from Scotts of Stow about 6 months ago - it holds over 700 CDs and cost about £170. I can't see it on their website, but they may offer it in their catalogue. Only problem is I now need another one.
