Motorola Razr V3
Posted by: Haroon on 15 December 2005
My old phone is on its last legs, so I'm tempted for a replacement jobbie on pay as you go. Anyone bought a motorola v3 and what do you think of it? I have heard from some peeps that it breaks - but that must be balanced by some crazy things they've done too like putting it in their pockets and sitting on it.
So whats the view of this phone?

Had mine a year now and its still in great condition, but I don't use it much other than to recharge the battery every week or so. There are signs that the battery may be dying - charging now every 5 days.
Very simple to use, fuss free and good reception in, at least for us, a poor reception area - my wife's Nokia is abysmal in comparison.

So I take it Motorola have improved their user interface over previous phones then? I love the look of the V3 but still have memories of an earlier Motorola that featured what was possibly the worst ever UI ever unleashed on an unsuspecting public.

On number 2 here. Not broken, but as second was free as an 'upgrade' I changed to a 'black' one. Will mark easier if dropped or scratched than the silver as I have found!
User Interface I find just about managable, but nowhere near as friendly or intuitive as my old Sony ericson (now in use by the 3rd owner in my family, and still going strong!) The Razr does have some things in its favour.. the actual size of the keys make txting far easier for me, and it fits well into shirt pockets.
Not at all sure about that wonderfull (!!) new pink version that is available? Trying to make the phone more trendy for the ladies methinks! The new Peble is very similar inside and there is a new standard (non flip) version of the razr available soon, if not already.

This is something i have heard about motos that they give lots more signal than most and a very important consideration - after all these wretched things are about making calls in the end. My nokia fails on me in certain areas too.

Had one for over a year now, great phone for size and battery life but the user interface is not as intuitive as others.
My partner got the new black one (and shock horror) it had more facilities - that said a hunt on the net and some trauma upgrading the firmware but my V3 can now take video as well as pictures and other nice things.
Beware the phones from Orange, for some reason orange insist on putting thier own customised software on thier phones, I'm not talking locking the phone to thier network which is fair enough but they disable standard features and change others.
All that said a great phone.

battery life terrible - compared to what?
poorly featured - compared to what? you mean it doesn't wipe your arse?
It is a telephone, you can get it free on some contracts. Its small, light and works well as phone

on a more practical note i have a fraternity brother who is on his fourth razr as the hinge mechanism keeps breaking. to my knowledge he does not abuse the things, and his service provider seems to be resigned to replacing them under warranty, citing it as a "very common problem"

Being a bit hyper am well known for destroying hinges but the V3 has stood up to me and the 2 others I know that have one have also had no problems,
As for battery life, mine when new was about 6 days, down to 3 or 4 now so guess time to buy a new one.

Darn it I was almost all ready to buy one today - then seen the spec for the new updated 3i - 2 megapixel camera with x8 resolution instead of 0.4 mg pixels with x4 zoom; 12 meg mem instead of 5 and allows memory cards; also dual hi res screens. 'Should' be with us now. though most likely early next year. looks like it will be free on contract but I want it on PAYG. So maybe it will be a case of battering it out with my current nokia just a while yet - darn thing will survive even a drop kick I reckon. There is also the 3xi which is a fatter 3g video phone version.

Good god Long-time you have linked to a solution to a problem no one had, why would you want the screen below the keypad, what if you are doing a text?
More over what if you are typing a phone number in or putting a contact on and you have to work your way round that circular keypad for the letters whilst try to see the screen which is being obscured by your hands.
Jesus what a shit design!

The link actually provided a solution to the "breakage" issue that was mentioned in the initial post. RTFTP
1. V3 breaks - solid aluminium design on the serene and assisted opening. Anodising means the finish is excellent.
2. Screen below - turn the phone the other way round. The screen inverts due to a gravity sensor. Simple logic.
3. Circular keypad. It's actually easier to move your finger in a circular motion than linearly. Try it. As for obscuring the screen - see point 2.
I guess your main point of concern is the fact the design is B&O. If it was designed by Naim but needed a 50lb battery pack you had to carry around, would that suffice ?
I've had the pleasure of actually messing around with this phone. It is a very tactile piece of kit - and it works very well. I'll obviously not mention the sound quality.....
Shit - I forgot. It's a mobile telephone, not a camera/jukebox/typewriter/organiser/vibrator, and it looks VERY similar in design (casewise) to the V3.

Long time, if you had ever read any mentions from me on B&O you would know that I respect them as a company. One thing I have always liked of theirs is the phones lovely sound quality.
I was not getting at you personally about the phone, and I believe most people would still struggle trying to read the letters on the numbers upside down and sideways.
It does look nice though.

It's a stunning phone. If you get the chance to actually try one - please do.
