Keyboards (the musical kind)

Posted by: DIL on 02 December 2007

Christmas is fast approaching and I'm thinking of getting a keyboard for the kids. (Daughter has been pestering, she's the musical one in the family). Any suggestions as to good brands and features I should be looking for? Price wise I was thinking £100-£150, but suggestions down- and up-market from that price point welcome.

Thanks.

I would be looking for a keyboard action that she likes & at least a few main voices which are fairly authentic/realistic.
Like a lot of tech toys, keyboards tend to be laden with "features", 90% of which are never used, so get the basics right & don't worry too much about millions of bells & whistles.
If the kids are getting piano/music lessons, which sounds are used most, & has the teacher got any recommendations or requirements?

Oh, nearly forgot.
Make sure the kids have got some headphones, too!

Roland is a good solid keyboard and good sounding with an especially fine piano simulation. A friend of mine who teaches music for a living uses one as his main teaching keyboard ...

It has weighted keys which give fair impression of the feel of a real action of normal piano.
