The hamster got out during the night
Posted by: JWM on 12 June 2010
Anyone got any tips for catching? (and no, cats, traps, etc are not acceptable suggestions...!)
Quite a large and rambling house with lots of little hidey holes behind things. We've had a good look, but can't see any trace. Perhaps there'll be more activity this evening?
I've got two days. JWM jnr gets back from Download on Monday.

Was it Clarkson's or Captain Slow's turn to look after him?

Good luck, you'll need it...
seagull jnr's hamster escaped and took a liking to my speaker cables, I found it under the shelves I kept my LPs in.
Miss seagull's hamster escaped and was lost for several days (she was away at Brownie camp - it always happens when the children are away). We looked everywhere but without any luck. Eventually we were looking in the playroom (a converted integral garage) and could hear some scratching. The hamster had got behind the plasterboard, we are still not sure how. I managed to make a small hole and coaxed it out but it was very fragile after that and did not last long

It’s probably having a nap behind a cupboard.
Leave fresh bedding material and food around the house. It’s natural instinct will be to take it back to it’s cage. Make sure you don’t close any internal doors in the house.

Sorry guys wasn't intended to be Morse code - was trying to post an image url and got it slightly wrong then got distracted by a poor attempt at a football game ...
Meant to say that you could use one of these as bait. For those not in the know it's a Hamstercaster ...

We caught ours with a humane mousetrap - a little plastic thing. Being designed for a mouse, it was too small, so we had to remove the end and tape a tumbler over it. Baited with a chickpea it worked first time, though the hamster got a bit sweaty inside the glass and looked very funny when we untaped tumbler and it popped it's bedraggled head out.

Thanks for replies guys. Had to go away whilst Forum was down so have only just caught up.
The good news is that it now seems the hamster (Percy) crept into the air hole under the unused gas fire in the dining room!
A bit of food and water has been put out to coax him out (and keep him alive), and the girls tried to capture him on webcam. Now dad’s back for a day before going back to Ox, I suppose I’ll have to have a go at capturing him! I already bear the scars of deep teeth marks!
The Missus seems to have bought a humane mouse trap, but not deployed it yet.
I'll keep you posted...

This puts the whole nDAC / transport debate into the correct perspective anyway.

Criccita.
Just back (Sunday 7.30pm) from my second stint in Oxford. To find...
...At last, the prisoner's back behind bars where he belongs!
"Wot, me?" asks Percy, "Wot did I do?"
After a week of no show, he was finally spotted coming out briefly from the chimney ventilation air hole under the unused gas fire.
I laid the ramp/food/drop-into-box trap last night whilst I was here. I checked this morning (05.00) before setting off for Oxford - clearly the blighter went in but somehow got out again! However, he clearly realised what was good for him, and during the course of today was to found have climbed back into his cage and gone to bed...

Glad Percy's safe and well James.
Hamsters do usually end up going back to their cage........eventually.

Phew! You came within a 'whisker' of disaster, James. It would have been a sorry 'tail' had you not 'rodent' to town and saved the day!
