Geting into LP's and need some help

Posted by: achandoke on 25 April 2003

I want to get into vinyl and I need some advice. I am not sure what tables are synergistic with Naim.

Most people like the LP12, but I cannot afford one currently. I was thinking about getting a Rega 25 with the RB600 tonearm.

I was wondering what people thought of that table and tonearm.

In addition, what type of cartridge would you use? Is there any recommendation?
I will of course get a stageline.

thanks in advance.

Achandoke,

try and find a good second hand Roksan Xerxes with a Tabriz arm and Chorus cartridge. This will work extremely well with your Naim amp's and provide a good basis for many upgrades in the future as and when funds become available.

Achandoke,

This post is likely to generate 200+ answers in this forum, each standing strong for a 'table/arm/cartridge combination.

INHO, 3 options:

1. find a dealer you can trust, listen to whatever they recommend, and buy the stuff that sounds right for you.

2. Search this forum for previous threads on the tipic - make sure the cofee pot is full before you start

3. My own: you can't go wrong with a Rega, especially if uyou're new to vinyl and don't want to spend 50% of your listening time wondering if it has been properly set up.

The good thing: all 3 options will guarantee you hours of sheer pleasure!

Achandoke.

Like ClaudeP suggests, visiting a good dealer or two is your best option. As I guess you have alredy noticed people tend to recommend what they own themselves. Like NB suggests, a Roksan Xerxes is a good tt but there are many others. I myself use and truly enjoy a LP12. I'm getting a bit bored with all the comments of the Linn being difficult to set up and keep in tune. It has been around for a very long time and it is an excellent turntable.

There have been some reports here about Well Tempered Lab turntables with some people changing their Lp12's for them, but also some have had a listen and found the Lp12 better........

The Rega 25 I have not heard, but I'm sure it's a good one.

I guess it's impossible for you to get an answer here, threads about turntables and equipment supports tend to get "infected" but quite amusing to read.

Good luck in your search and keep us informed about your findings.

The rega range is a well established product and a particular market leader in the low cost sector. There are many rega users on here. Others to consider if you want to spread the net wider, might be Nottingham Analog and Project Turntables, both of whom make excellent entry level decks.

I'm in the LP12 camp having 'bought-in' back in '84, but TT zealotry isn't my strong point, so buy whatever suits your ears (and pocket) - good secondhand and much loved LP12s can often be a good deal though and there's plenty around to be snapped up by the astute buyer. Wink
