Beresford DAC - Grounding

Posted by: pcstockton on 24 July 2008

Some of you might recall some posts a few months back regarding using a Beresford as the sole source in Naim kit.

Since no other sources are used, and the Beresford does not correctly earth the kit, I was experiencing a high pitched "noise" when the one or more of the following conditions are met:

1) DAC is off
2) No signal going to the DAC
3) Selecting a different input on the DAC than what is connected.

Stanley, in his ultimate quest for perfect customer service, has been continuously working on this issue without my prodding.

When we last spoke, he thought the only solution would be to use a "regulate, linear power supply" of which I could not find any locally. I was hesitant to buy one online not knowing what return policies are, or if it would even work.

A few days back he gave me a suggestion which I did not try as it seemed a little unsafe or possibly detrimental to mains quality. He suggested attaching a ground wire from the B-ford case to the earth pin on the 180 mains lead.

I wasn't very comfortable doing this for unknown reasons.

He just emailed me and said a fellow Naimer is doing this to great effect. From Stanley Beresford's email:

"Get a cheap RCA audio cable from Radio Shack and cut one of the RCA plugs off. The strip back about 1 inch of the outer plastic sleeving. Cut off the inner plastic sleeving with the copper strands that are in the center of the cable. That leaves you with just the outer copper strands on one end. Twist the strands together and connect them to the earth tag of your amp. That's assuming you have an amp that also has a turntable input since only those types of amp have an earth tag these days. The other end of the cable you plug into one of the output sockets of the DAC."

I will try it tonight and report the results.

the Supernait is awesome. I am very happy you are enjoying it.

I wish I had one...

Daddy,

Dont expect an answer on this one. I have asked this question at least a dozen times when trying to help Stanley suss out the issue.

I asked here on this forum, a well known NANA employee both in email and on the phone, as well as a general email to Naim.

Not once was I even acknowledged, let alone answered.

Perhaps it is a stupid question we should know the answer to. But it seems only Naim understands their earthing arrangement and it seems they want to keep it that way.

What i was told, although i dont consider it an answer, was that a Naim CDP would ground my kit correctly.

I was very curious if I could achieve this through the use of a turn table. And if so, what do i need to ensure it does or doesn't do. At this point a Naim CDP is not an option, as it is not needed in the least.

The only place CDs have in my life right now is in the car.

Let us all know if you receive an answer through back channels.

I have a Beresford on the way and also received my CD5x last week. I'll connect the Beresford and try it with and without the 5x connected to see if this provides any clues for us. Hopefully I don't have any buzzing issues with either scenerio.

Vaughan

Mine works flawlessly with or with or without my CD connected.

keep in mind gents... my issue is NOT a hum. It is a high pitched "noise" hiss like sound.

It only occurs when not receiving a signal i.e. i am not listening and the pre is muted.

It is not a terribly loud noise. But it is audible if I turn off the source, or the DAC and leave my 102 un-muted.

I just thought it was something to be addressed or corrected if possible.

Otherwise the B-ford is well worth $200.

Lavry coming VERY soon. A/B comparisions close behind.

I received my Beresford yesterday. Excellent packaging and build quality. The results were as expected, a very nice improvement over the analog outputs in my blu-ray player, well worth the money...no hum or noise or whatever you want to call it.

Stanley commented to me that it takes "3 days to loosen up, and up to 3 weeks to get the full shebang". This coming weekend I'll dig out all of my concert DVDs and really dig in.

I don't feel it's fair to compare it to my new CD5x considering the price difference, but the 5x is well ahead.
