Man's Mickey Jones has passed away

Posted by: Jet Johnson on 15 March 2010

Guitarist and singer Micky Jones, one of the founders of Welsh prog rock band, Man, has died aged 63. With Merthyr Tydfil-born Jones, the band had four Top 40 UK albums from the late 1960s and toured across Europe and America, where admirers included Frank Zappa. Friend and former colleague Phil Little said Jones had a "command of melody" and was "the most humble guy". Jones, who had been fighting a brain tumour, died at a care home in Swansea.

Man were a teenage fave of mine when I was still at school and in the 70's I bought most of their stuff ..."Be Good To Yourself At Least Once A Day" remains one of my all time favourite albums not to mention their prime contribution to the Greasy Truckers Live Double album.

.....RIP Mickey - a fine guitar player

That's very sad news. I'm a huge fan, although my personal favourite Man album is Back Into the Future. An album I continue to play regularly ever since I saw a TV programme in the early/mid 70s featuring the band and the photo session for the cover.

Like Stu saw them a couple of times always laugh when I think of the first time I saw them sing Bananas and the audience started throwing Bananas at the stage. Sad news.

Excellent band, a sort of British version of the Good 'ole Grateful Dead with their family spirit and members leaving and returning.

Must agree with Jet - you have picked the cream of the crop with those 2 albums and the one with John Cippolina is also a treat.

I like to eat bananas..................

Someone recently posted about music that had opened a door in our youth.

The first side of the original vinyl 'Greasy Truckers' album did that for me and I saw Man several times around Essex.

The album has recently been reissued in extended format on 3 CDs:

Man's entire set from the show is included. Their performance alone is worth the price of admission. Expect to pay around £12.50 for the three disc set.

It's so sad that Micky has left us but he and the rest of the band still evoke many happy memories for me.

...I used to find it funny that one track on Greasy Truckers was devoted to a power cut during the concerts (this being in the 70's at the time of the 1st miner's strike)

.....I'm also minded to play my 10" vinyl copy of Man's "Live at The Padget Rooms Penarth" - since re-released I gather on CD with extra tracks (?)

Another great live album is the 10" double of "Christmas at the Patti" which features Man and also many of their off-shoot and pre-Man combos.

On CD there are many live recordings from the 80's (legitimate releases) but the performance and sound quality is not up to those mentioned already.
