Using an AV amp as a Pre-Amp only

Guys,
I'm already using a combination of a Marantz AV amp with my Nait 5.
The Nait is used exclusively for stereo music listening, but for AV work, uses a pre out from the Marantz to power the fronts.
As I'm sure you're all aware, AV amps generally sound pretty awful when compared to Naim kit.
So, here's the question for you, imagine I wanted to upgrade my quite old Marantz SR880.
Is there a big difference to the pre-amp sections in AV amps?
My thoughts are to try to get some old Nap90s for the rears and front centre.
I know that the "right" thing would be to buy the Naim AV pre, but it's far more money than I'm willing to spend.
So, is there a difference in pre-amp quality between a cheapy AV amp, a good Japanese AV amp and say something like the arcam unit?
