AV2 as a DAC via Apple Express/iTunes/Apple Lossless or AIFFs?

Has anyone had any success with this particular set up? I've read that the Express has an optical output but not sure what cable i'd need to make the connection to the AV2 and whether it can decode the Apple files or not and then output them through the rest of the system (282/SC/250.2/Allaes).

It'll decode apple losless - this is done within the AE so the AV2 sees a 44.1khz 16 bit SPDIF feed whether you play MP3's or whatever from iTunes through the AE.

You'll need a Toslink to Mini Toslink - the mini looks like a 3.5mm jack plug (see piccy) and this goes into your Airport Express.

I've done this with an AE and an Apple TV. Used apple lossless files and conecte via optical cable (toslink to mini-Toslink)

I just use a normal optical cable and bought a mini-Toslink adapter off ebay for 99p

Ah, i see. I thought that the AEX output the files as bitstream, so that the AV2 could then do the DA conversion, then output that to the 282.

I'm guessing i might as well go straight from the AEX to the 282 now then?

Sorry for the dumb sounding question but i'm sure i read a post from Richard Dane saying that the AV2 is overlooked as a DAC even though it isn't in the same league as the Supernait's or the new DAC.
