One share folder - controlled by HDX-SSD and iTunes

Posted by: motughosh on 19 November 2010

OK, I'm new to Naim but it's been a life-long ambition to own a system and I'm finally here... it's been quite a learning curve (and HDX three boxes later...)

My set-up is: HDXSSD/NAC282/250/Supercap2/Synology NAS

My question is, does anyone know whether it's possible to use the naim music share folder on my NAS for iTunes to read from at the same time? I still buy CDs and want to rip them to nas but I don't want to duplicate .WAV files to an iTunes folder too. I want to be able to rip a CD via the HDX and then access either via the HDX or iTunes for other rooms... With artwork intact.

Do I need other software?

Should I just rip via a PC-iTunes and then share the iTunes folder to HDX?

Is the quality ripped using iTunes as good as the HDX?

Thanks in advance...

Hi motughosh,
Impressive system for starters . . . . !
You can't access the wav's ripped by HDX in iTunes unforunately (well, not strictly true, but no tagging picked up so you won't be able to tell which track you have selected), but everything on a NAS can be read by HDX, so if you want to use multiple sources better to use a different file format.
I'd suggest ripping in aiff. There are lots of opinions re ripping accuracy - your system might be good enough to detect differences that some hear, mine isn't (for me anyway - MacMini/SuperNait). Alternative rippers include Max (mac) and Db Poweramp (Windows).
I keep another library converted to 256kbps which I stick on iPods to use in the car.
There's no going back once started, the quality as well as the convenience sees to that!

I have my hdx configured to rip to wav and a mps duplicate, could you use your nas to stream the mp3 folders to itunes.

that is if you are happy for this on your computer, i do this to load onto my ipod. that way i do not need to rip twice.

the art work comes through on the mp3 but not the wav.

I presume you meant MP3 not MPS, but please detail how you have configured the HDX to do a duplicate Rip to WAV and MP3...I am sure many users will benifit from the information.

Hi,

Firefly seems to be a media server that works with iTunes, may be try that.

www.fireflymediaserver.org

Their server seems to be down at present so I cannot check it.

Thanks for the feedback. I feared that there wasn't an option within the software but I guess that, if it's possible to rip two formats simultaneously to different folders on the NAS, this is an acceptable workaround.

Does anyone know how to do this? Are there any tools to help me access the HDX - I.e. What a dealer might use? My dealer understands precisely zero about anything advanced in naim distributed audio.

How do I set-up the aiff format?

Based on my £23k spend, dealer knowledge, and poor control software (the ipad app?) and ropey hdx execution. I feel that naim have a very long way to go...

Try giving them a ring, naim that is, i had a problem with my hdx setup and they were getting ready to do some kind of vpn into my pc and use that to set the hdx up.

Thx all, appreciate the help, I'll give them a call and feedback any mod that lets me change any rip formats in the hdx. Cheers
