How Long Have Black SNAICs Been Around ?
Posted by: markjp on 11 December 2001
I have just purchased 2 Black SNAICS one from my NAC62 to NAP140. The other is from my Flatcap to CD3.5. On installing the cables I have noticed that the SNAIC from Flatcap to CD3.5 is already BLACK ! I know I should have checked my existing cables before buying the new ones, but I assumed that the Black SNAIC had ony just come out. I bought my Flatcap in March 2000.
Is my black SNAIC really a grey one in disguise !!

Where did that info come from? Not that I plan to change my "old" Black Snaics. Imagine changing cables every two years!

I phoned NAIM today and they said Black SNAICS have been around for 2- 2.5 years. The outer sheathing has changed since being black, some have a NAIM logo or say SNAIC some don't, but sonically there is no difference. Therefore if you have a black SNAIC you have the latest cable.
My dealer can't or won't give me a refund for the Black SNAIC I ordered from my Flatcap to 3.5 as it was a special order! I have asked them to see whether NAIM will swap it for a SNAIC between my CD3.5 and NAC62 (Which I know is definately grey!)
I may have to pay a surcharge though, dealer says it may be 20%.

Presumably that quote refers to a CD interconnect, not a Snaic (?)
...I'll check my purchase date, thanks Martin

Hope a Mana jacket can execute the test.
BTW--if you sold it already, let me ask if you were good enough to feed the poor blokes who came 'round to pick it up?
Actually I stuffed some 11 pieces including a 4 tier in my Camry and delivered it 90 miles one way.

That would surprise me, as the CDS I doesn't use a Snaic but a Burndy.

P.S. The black snaic (between my 102 and hi-cap) works much better than my brain or the grey snaic it replaced. However, my black burndy doesn't.Guess it'll bloom when I get that 52 one day;)

This doesn't apply to your CDS I Burndy lead, which was manufactured after the change. Perhaps you need to flex it a bit, as this will improve sound quality (in the same way that flexing a SNAIC willopen things up a bit).

I understand that this manufacturing tweak was applied to all Naim cables from then on?
That info's a bit third-hand, but there are supposed to be early & late SNAICs, and I'd always thought this was the explanation.
