Favorite Live Performances Attended

Those I remember at the moment are:

Metallica, 1988. I was just feet from the stage and had lots of teen angst Mad The local news van outside was tipped over following the show; mom and dad were concerned, having seen it on the 11 o'clock news (which of course made it even better).

Primus, on 6 occassions from 1990-1995.

Public Enemy, 1990 in a college auditorium. P-o-w-e-r-f-u-l and extremely tight! Wow.

Pearl Jam, 1992 or so. Best rock show I've seen, and the timing of it all was perfect.

Beck, 1993 and 1995? What a versatile entertainer. His DJ was outstanding too.

Bob Mould, 1995 or thereabouts in a very small club. Still haven't seen anyone play with so much emotion and excellence on guitar.

?unknown name?- Spring 1999 in Cape Town, South Africa. A local band with the most amazing percussion section. Everyone in the club had a huge smile.

?unknown name?- February 2003 in Parati, Brazil. Smoothest female voice I've heard, backed by a talented acoustic guitarist.

Wilco and Pavement performances within the last 5 years were also impressive.

(Worst performance of all time was U2 on their glitzy tour in 1993 or so; I never heard such terrible drumming.)

I have seen ACR about 60 times (mostly in the 80s).

Some of their more memorable gigs include Heaven 2312/80 (supporting Throbbing Gristle, remember?), Electric Ballroom 10/79, Lyceum 2/82, Hacienda 7/84, Hammersmith 8/84, Camden Palace 12/84, ICA 3/85 etc

Agree with you re Severed Heads - great live act. Where did you see 'em?

Rock:

Gentle Giant at the Montreal Forum, circa 1977. No more than 8,000 people in the place and I was sitting about 60 ft. from the stage. What a performance!

Classical:

Hard to say. I recently attended a concert by Aryon, playing works by CPE Bach on traditional instruments. Very interesting to hear chamber music played on traditional instruments and in an intimate environment - now I know what a harpischord really sounds like. Plus the solists were absolutely top-notch.

A great moment. Funny thing is, the concert was a fund-raising event for Aryon (I was replacing my boss who can't stand baroque music - sigh), so the room was full of businessmen who didn't have a clue what they were listening to.

Severed Heads

I saw them in a cinema in Hampstead in the eighties.

There were using a prototype video synthiser to provide visuals. Tom Ellard played and sang, his mate twiddled the knobs on the video synth and made pretty patterns on the screen. This was before PCs etc.

They ran out of material after an hour, so started to play from the beginning again!

ACR

I think I was at the Lyceum gig in '82 - Were Big Country the support?

Re: Gigs

Most memorable / enjoyable -

1. Van Morrison & Caledonian Soul Orchestra Birmingham Town Hall c.1974? (Not I hope the same tour Nick Lees referred to in his "worst" selection)

2. John Stewart in a pub in Harborne (B'ham) a few years back

3. The Who and (everyone else) at Charlton

4. The Nice at Wolverhampton last year - just for the nostalgia value

5. Van der Graaf / Genesis / Lindisfarne, Charisma Tour B'ham |Town hall

6. Dr.Feelgood "Naughty Rhythms" Tour B'ham Town Hall

7. Any Richard Thompson gig but especially the Electric / band shows

8. Any Dead concert just for the atmosphere even if the playing was not 100%

9. (Almost) any Fall gig

10. Elvis Costello B'ham Symphony Hall

Although every band has off nights and you can be in the unlucky town, I've only ever walked out of one show and that was Santana, Birmingham Odeon. They played OK it was just...........boring.

This is not being stuck in a time warp as there are still many artists older and current that I will buy new product from - I just dont want to travel long distances and pay big bucks to see people beyond their sell-by dates.

As for the others, the only show I would 'phone up for today is Howe Gelb / Giant Sand.

Be seeing you (but not at many gigs these days)

I think we were at the same Severed Heads show!

There were two ACR gigs at he Lyceum in 82.

The best was in February, with Maximum Joy in support. The second was in November, with 52nd Street bottom of the bill (guest apearance fro Bernard from New Order on synth squelches), followed by Big Country, followed by ACR. The Ratios had started to lose a bit of their edge at that point, slipping into jazz-fubk mode. I still have a tape of the gig somewhere. I think it was the last with Peter Terel. It wasn't until mid-84 they got ot back.

Ironchopper

I saw NY on Sunday. He was bloody good (as he should have been at fifty bleedin' quid a pop). The new material was excellent, bodes well for the next album.

However, like you, I prefer it when he plugs in and makes a racket (as at Brixton last year).

Kevin,

52nd Street! A blast from the past. I missed them by arriving late at the Lyceum

They have released loads of records, first couple of singles brilliant sequenced squelching synth pop, (Cool as Ice, Can't afford) the rest average jazz funk.

Similar fate to ACR, when they went off the boil.

Great live events. I tried to limit myself…but I had so much fun remembering these.

XTC, Magazine, Cabaret Voltaire – Sheffield University 1978-80.

The Ramones – Sheffield Top Rank 1978. Hey ho, let’s go! 40 songs in, oh…45 minutes?

The Clash – various places 1978 - 1983.

Womad – Shepton Mallet 1983. Incredible line-up but virtually deserted. Ian McCulloch: “Hello, we’re Echo and the Burundimen”.

Talking Heads – Melbourne 1984 (Stop Making Sense tour)

Mark Stuart and Maffia – Bristol Trinity Centre 1985(?) First exposure to the mixing skills of Adrian Sherwood and wonderful world of on-u sound.

Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra / Leonard Bernstein: Mahler 5 – Proms 1987. My first visit to the Albert Hall. Hitch-hiked down from Bradford and got back home at 5am.

Extreme Noise Terror / Napalm Death double bill – Bradford 1987(?) 40 songs in, oh…15 minutes?

Taxi Gang (Sly and Robbie) – Bradford 1988(?). Rib-crushing bass for four hours. Awesome.

Augustus Pablo – Astoria London 1989. A great hero and he didn’t disappoint.

Public Enemy – Brixton Academy 1990.

Sunsplash – Jamaica 1990. Five days of Reggae. Best bit was Shabba Ranks upstaging everyone by arriving by helicopter at about 7am (things had been going for about 9 hours at that stage).

George Clinton, Bootsy Collins et al. Various occasions 1980’s and 1990’s. A double bill with the JB’s at Brixton Academy in 1990 was particularly wonderful.

Oasis – The Venue, New Cross, London 1993. A pub, essentially. A buzz was just starting. They were brilliant. Six months later they were on a big stage in Glastonbury. It was downhill from then on.

Glasto. 1994 (and many others). Orbital – Saturday night: Bliss. Joyce – Sunday morning: “what’s a nice girl like me doing in a place like this?”

Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra / Abbado Proms 1994 – Mahler 9. I’ve written about this amazing concert before. The silence of 6000 people listening intently to the final 15 minutes or so was quite incredible and the performers responded.

Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra / Ozawa – Royal Festival Hall London 1995. Musically unmemorable, but must be included as I met my wife here!

Herbie Hancock – Mean Fiddler, Harlsden 1996. Tiny venue, last minute gig. Great band of course, including the fantastic Dave Holland on Bass. People were practically hanging from the rafters.

BBC Symphony Orchestra/Boulez London 1997 – Stravinsky Le Rossignol and Rite of Spring.

Alfred Brendel and Mauritzio Pollini London 1994 - 1997 – Beethoven Piano Sonatas Integral

Joanna McGregor Proms 1999 – Harrison Birtwhistle: Harrison’s Clocks

BBC SO / Wand – Schubert 8 / Bruckner 9 Proms, London 2001 – final UK concert. I could have chosen many others.

Paul McCartney Earl’s Court – 2003. Dragged along by my wife to this one, but managed to get cheap tickets right at the front at the last minute. Amazingly good for an Arena event. Thumbs up for Macca!

Disappointment (at the time):

The Wild Bunch – Bristol 1986(?). Amateurish attempts at DJ’ing and Rapping. I can’t tell you how astonished I was after they metamorphosed into Massive Attack and I heard ‘Unfinished Sympathy’ for the first time!

I too saw this Drama tour - in Leicester De Montford Hall.

Trevor Horn was dismal! I've even got a tape of the gig which proves it!

Favourites - but last minute or "invited to by friends" and "not really bothered about seeing them" gigs:

OMD - Leicster De Mont blew me away!
Roxy Music - Flesh and Blood tour - Leics Granby Halls totally spell bound!- totally amazing.
Queen - Wembly 1985 - superb
Gary Glitter - Various Notts/Leics - Such good fun!
Erasure - Milton Keyens - I couldn't believe how much I enjoyed those guys!
Shirley Bassey - London Royal Theatre thingy (across river from Savoy hotel) - what an amazing entertainer - such a belting voice!

Gigs I was bothered about and enjoyed:

Quo - several times
Be Bop Deluxe - 3 times Leics De Mont - brilliant
Elvis Costello 3 times - Leics De Mont - Brilliant
Earth Wind and Fire - twice NEC - great seats, the best show you'll ever see
Stereo MC's - Sheffield Uni - quite simply brilliant
Bruce Woolley & The Camera Club - Loughborough Uni - Awesome
Thomas Dolby - Nottingham Rock City - brilliant
The Mavericks - Warwick Uni - Blew me away
Squeeze - NEC - centre 3rd row, Jools Holland - not a bad moment! (brilliant sound too - amazing for the NEC!)
Squeeze - Wolverhampton Civic Hall - great venue and Squeeze were once again amazing!

Worst ones:
10cc - Birmingham Concert Hall - should have stayed at home and played the CD

Bruce Horsnby - Concert Hall Brum - BORING left 1/2 way through

Yes - Drama tour - Leics (I think Granby Halls) truly dreadful. Music was OK - vocals appallingingly bad.

The last Gary Glitter tour I saw - too much hype, too much glitz and special effects and lost the magic of the early days completely....

XTC - Loughborough Uni - I was big fan but felt Bruce Woolley and the Camera Club (who were supporting them) blew them off the stage...

Mike Oldfield - Loughborough Uni - totally boring and uninvolving. Left before the end. A total waste of £7.50

Computers are supposed to work on 1's and 0's - in other words "Yes" or "No" - why does mine frequently say "Maybe"?......

Belfast, late 70's;

Rory Gallagher - godawful
Stiff Little Fingers - superb - they ran out of songs and had to encore with "Tiger Feet"
Undertones - not too bad at all
John Martyn - fantastic
Numerous Northern Irish garage bands - by and large, terrible

Birmingham

Captain Beefheart - hee hee, just great
Talking Heads - possibly my favourite band of all time (although I don't really listen to rock music now)
Buzzcocks - past their peak by some distance
The Cure - unbelievably pretentious
Slade - the ultimate old lags, who tuned up with Smoke on the Water!
Elvis Costello - an off day, I think, as he only played for 45 minutes, insulted the audience and was booed off stage
John Martyn (several times) - really excellent

London

198? Capital Radio Reggae Festival at Wembley Arena - Black Uhuru, etc. - possibly the best concert I've ever been to - absolutely incredible atmosphere
Stevie Wonder - only OK'ish, unfortunately
George Benson - surprisingly good
Rolling Stones - fairly dull, unfortunately

Hong Kong

A couple of "canto pop" concerts - indescribably boring, but the hall is full, and there's a lot of dry ice, sequins and screaming teenagers
Duran Duran - slightly less boring, but playing to a 20% capacity hall, with the same amount of dry ice
Whitney Houston - unbelievably arrogant - she confiscated three cameras during the concert, and was loudly booed
Oasis - what a bunch of farts - just ignore them

I'm searching for the "envy" emoticon....

Whatever happened to Bill Nelson ?

Brian OReilly
Posted on: 22 May 2003 by blythe
Bill Nelson went on to form "Red Noise" who played some good stuff. Then he went all weired and not to my taste.
He also produced some of the stuff by "A Flock Of Seagulls" who I really liked.
I believe he also did some film scores.

After that, I'm not sure.

Be Bop Deluxe were brilliant and I'm so pleased that I saw them 3 times (rubbing it in!)

Great Gigs

Can, B'Ham Town Hall, ?1973, first full UK tour.
Over 3 hours , encore after encore, band finished with house lights up and Hall manager on stage trying to stop themwith little luck. Can gigs were fun trying to identify the snippets they were improvising from, best ever evidence i have seen for telepathic communication. Never tired of seeing them live.
Other highlights:-
Gentle Giant
Magma ( also saw a poor gig when Vander did 30 min drum solo, good for the bar visit though)
Van Der Graaf-Godbluff tour
Roy Harper, annual pilgrimage to see him, always fun, his chat can be either amusung orirritating, better now that he is less or not stoned.
Nick Harper
Hawkwind-Space Ritual
Nektar
Man
list could go on and on
as in early 70's was going to 3+ gigs a week in B'Ham, all cheap (Led Zep IV tour £1 !!!)

No question. The "Boss", with the Clash a distant second.

I´ve never seen anyone communicate such magic and natural charisma with the audience. And I don´t even like much of his recorded music.

At least twice more at B'hamTown Hall(Post Damo era) and also Wolverhampton Civic Hall ?76/77 (Holger on Short wave Radio and Re-Bop on Bass)
The live Cd does capture some of the flavour of what the gigs were like but wish that they would raid their archives to release a definitive Can live collection. Now realise how lucky I was to see them.

Hi there,

Just to share the experiences, I had been to many many gigs. Echo & the bunnymen or Ian McCulloch's are always good. The Smiths was very good too.

Kraftwerk at Brixton Academy was another excellent one which I can remember.

I would love to go to the Cocteau Twins, but surely the multi-layers vocals would be as good as the records.

cheers

Believe it or not, Kid Creole and the Coconuts were amazing on stage!

So were The Clash, The Specials, XTC, UB40, Joy Division, The Ramones... and on and on.

The worst was Captain Beefheart. By a mile.

These were all in Bristol in the very early 80s.

Mr Rasher... I know the feeling. When I was at college I always seemed to be seeing Terrorvision. Suppose it was partly from living near Bradford. Only ever bought one ticket for a Terrorvision gig!
