Pls help: Got Nait, need CDP - 5 vs. 5i vs. SACD
Posted by: TobiC on 10 January 2004
I've got a Nait 5 working well with B&W CDM 7NT, but definitely need a new CD Player.I would be happy for any advice. Identified options so far:
1. CD5 (incl. option to add Flatcap 2 to improve both Nait and CD 5)
2. CD5i (because it saves money for option 3)
3. Wait for some DVD5 / MULTI5(i) or whatever Naim may come up with to address growing demand for some CD follow-up
Cheers,
Tobe

Welcome Tobe
I reckon you know already that option 1) has upgradeability since you mention the possibility to add a FC2 later.
IMHO that is worth the extra over option 2
Option 3. Well the only comments I would make are a rumor I heard that the DVD player will be somewhere around 2000 GB Pounds when it does finnally arrive and the feeling that a player optimised for DVD will not be best VFM for CD on an equivalent price basis, though there are comments that CD replay could be about bare CD5 level (no FC or HiCap).
Having said all that the most impoatant thing to try and do is demo your options and see what sound appeals to you before buying.
Maybe it is worth hanging on for the release of the DVD player. They say patience is a virtue.
Whatever you do good luck

Are we assuming that the Naim DVD player won't do DVD audio very well?

I would hope that it does do DVD-A well for that kind of money, but I won't be one of the first to get one, I'll wait and read other reviews.

Again rumor but I heard it will offer an add-on board for DVD-A or SACD, your choice but not both.
Certainly the stereo layer on DVD-A discs (when included) can be quite excellent, especially if done at 24bit/192 Khz (Steely Dan's "everything must go" is an example).
