I was driving home the other day from helping my parents out. They had given me some money and I hadn't splurged on vinyl in a Loooong time (years) tho I'd upgraded preamp last summer to a 52 Scap. I veered left at the 101 freeway in LA and headed to Amoeba music at 3 PM.
First I noticed a Dylan boxed set Tell Tale Signs rare and unreleased 89-06. Geeze ONLY $95. I hesitated then grabbed it. I was amazed at the new vinyl available, and the buying spree was on.
Joni Mitchell: 5 of her later works, one live 2 LP recording in Santa Barbara, one of the places I'd lived, the pile was growing.
Neil Young: 2 LP Live in San Francisco with Crazy Horse, but several other options I held back. What is DMM cutting? Only $32 yikes
ZZ Top: Tejas and 180 gram Tres Hombres, I don't have any 180 vinyl, I'm getting into that again tonight.
I passed on Roxy Music 180 gram, but think I should go back for it.
The Pretenders: Learning to Crawl for a HUGE amount of $2, I'm going back for the others as it really knocked my socks off.
Santana: Abraxas
I'm holding the Dylan for a good friend Sunday after our usual breakfast and going to wow him with virgin vinyl. He really appreciates luxury and can't afford it. He knows of my Naim obsession tho not the price tag, my system with untouched LPs: PRICELESS.
When I checked out I was on such a high, the guy was lots of fun. Asked me how much I'd bet on the outcome, I said oh, $230, we talked, I told him about Naim, he was entertained, The total was $295, I gasped. He reached down and pulled out a new black canvas bag with the logo and a bunch of stickers so I felt like customer service was number ONE.
I've only listened to half of it. Only one was a toss, Steve Miller Band, I have his Anthology and love it, this one sounds compressed and not so great material. It sure does make a difference in recording/pressing. I'll listen to it again see if it grows on me.
Now for a raid on the jazz and R&B section and stuff that new bag full. I'll take what I've culled out over the last few months to help with the hefty price tag I'm expecting.
