The RECORD of 2005 to buy?
Posted by: Jonas Olofsson on 03 January 2006
Gentlemen,
If you had to choose one record from 2005 that you MUST buy, which one would it be? Im looking for some new music (feels I bought everything out there worth to have for the moment).
For you who havent bought it yet, I would say that Kraftwerks Minimum-Maximum is THE record of 2005.

Funeral by arcade fire or Aerial by Kate Bush are two that spring immediately to mind.

Aerial by Kate Bush is an essential for me, but if I'm only allowed just one then it can only be
It's HMHB at their best complete with Joy Division Oven Gloves

The records I would choose would be 2004 (but only just discovered), but as it's for 2005, it has to be The Way Up by Pat Metheny Group.

The absolute best album I purchased in 2005 is "Odyssey" by Fischerspooner.

The Rolling Stones, A Bigger Bang; the young & hip rock bands must be secretly embarassed to not come close to being this good. Charlie's finest moment, IMHO.

Have to agree with Aerial and Minimum-Maximum, and also '64-'95 by Lemonjelly.

If only one then Kate Bush Aerial.
No contest in 2005.
But I am going to cheat...
(And there are also some from 2004 so cheating twice)
Rufus Wainwright Want One and Want two
Stina Nordenstam The world is saved
KD Lang Hyms for the 49th paralell

Actually, this is the best record of 2005. The CD came out in 2004, but on vinyl in 2005, so it qualifies.

I would have to vote...
Bright Eyes-I'm Wide Awake, Its Morning.
although its fair to say that 2005 was a pretty good year for re-issues, particually ones that have been re-mastered from the originals...or at least it has in the pop culture genre.

Yes, an excellent album but a dire recording. Sounds terrible on my system. One for the boom box or car I think.

Apart from Kate Bush's 'Aerial' for people who like Kate Bush, I liked the cunning funny way Kaiser Chiefs distilled much of the essence of pop from the 1960s to now on their releases, especially on their album (especially vinyl version) and on their DVD.
I cannot recommend a 'classical' or 'jazz' release, as I felt need to buy nothing 'new'.
'Folk' stuff for me was catered for nicely by the 5 June Tabor CDs, and by the 2 Maddy Prior CDs/1 DVD.
2005 was the year when I (others maybe) first forked out legally to download sounds not available on plastic format.

Can't do one, but can get it down to three:
Dimanche a Bamako by Amadou & Mariam
Heart of the Moon by Ali Frake Touré and Toumani Diabate
Minimum Maximum by Kraftwerk.

Another vote for Min Max Kraftwerk which is a stunning album.
I saw Kraftwerk at the Hammersmith Odeon when I was but a mere boy.

Has anybody else heard Lookaftering by Vishti Bunyan.
Only 35 years after Vashti released Just Another Diamond Day she released a new collection of haunting songs. Lookaftering is a set of authentic melodies played on acoustic instruments. Her voice is so natural.

Laura Veirs: Year Of Meteors for those of folky persuasion. The Magic Numbers for a great feelgood blast. Kate Bush still a big favourite at home.

It's a toss up between Bollani / Bodilsen / Lund - Gleda and Omar Sosa's Mulatos. Both have had extensive air time.
Discovering the various delights of the naive label's Vivaldi series has also yielded some gems.
