This may be a silly question, but what does the AV2 actually do? The DVD5 presumeably will feed the various sound channels and a video signal....

You raise a good point. The answer is that it can be done in both places. To prevent processing of the LPCM signal twice, it's usual to bypass as much processing in the player as possible and do it all once, in the processor. In the player, set all speaker levels to their default (0db) setting and set all speakers to large to bypass bass management.
