listening vs. playing music

Posted by: peach on 21 May 2003

I am impressed by the knowledge, civility and eclectic taste of forum members. For this reason i assume there are several musicians of various abilities taking part in these discusions.Looking at my living room it's almost comical the disparity in financial outlay i have in my Naim equipment vs. what i spend on equipment to play my own(a fraction). Here it's probaly a reflection of what i hear.Any comments regarding your world?

Hi Peach,

I play guitar. I have a really nice classical, A Martin JM40, A Fender Strat and Tele (my favorite) and a Seagull baby grand. Other people sing when they listen to music. I pick up a guitar.

I play piano, various other keyboards, saxophone, clarinet, (learning) guitar and bass, and I diddle around with various other instruments. I've got a Heintzman upright grand in my living room, a Yamaha P-80 digital piano, three guitars (Godin LGX, Epiphone ES-335 DOT, and Norman acoustic), and three basses (Alembic Epic, Steinberger fretless, and Ibanez fretless). I've got a computer-based recording studio, along with a Roland VS-880 digital recording workstation.

All told, my music making gear is probably worth somewhere in excess of $10,000US. In comparison, my main stereo system cost approximately double that amount, and my CD collection is worth somewhere between the two.

Actually, of that stuff, only the piano permanently resides in the living room. My "studio" is in my office upstairs.

As to the upgraditis bug, I've pretty much nipped that one in the bud. I still tweak my system here and there, but I don't intend to spend thousands of dollars for a bit better sound, when I'm already in heaven. Smile

Hmmmmm...

From the days when music paid me a crust:

Premier XPK 8/10/12/14/20, Pearl FFS 14", Yamaha 12" maple, Zildjian Ks, Alesis D4

...used to have more - a second drum-kit, but I gave that to a local school for handicapped kids - it was the 'gigging' kit, and as I had no space for two kits and it was well 'gigged' =- i.e. scratches, bumps, etc. I kept the kit in the better condition.

I'd lusted for a Yamaha 9000 recording custom for years and years, but ultimately as a poor sod without much money the XPK offered most of the performance at half the cost. However, I would never compromise of my K Zildjians.

I don't make any money from music now - haven't done so for quite some time - but the key difference I observe is that the instruments were *tools* whereas the hifi is a *fun* thing. Any decent sound engineer can make my XPK sound like a Maple Custom, so affordability, solidity, parts availability and construction pointed me to Premier, though I still covet a 9000RC.

I digress.
