Boards of Canada et al

Posted by: Brucie on 04 February 2008

I've recently bought Boards of Canada "Music has a Right.." and whilst it took a while I've really got into it and can understand why people rave about it.

So what would be my next Boards album...Geogaddi? Are there any others?

Also whilst we are on the subject does anyone have other recommendations of recent good electronica in the same kind of laid back, innovative, left field oh its so hard to categorise music..?

Bruce

P.S Off topic a bit...I have one Orbital album, Blue (excellent in places) and have been meaning to get another for a while. Is it true their first 2-3 albums are better than later ones, Blue aside?

Hi Bruce,

Both 'Geogaddi' and the four track EP 'In A Beautiful Place Out In The Country' are must haves. I'd start with those two.

By the way, you do realise your fondness for BoC is probably a result of the subliminal messages they're so fond of? Apparently, some music journos refuse to even listen to them for this reason!

There are loads of other things to try in a similar style, but one you must hear is Four Tet - 'Rounds'. I never tire of playing this - just a beautiful record.

As for Orbital, I only have their first four albums, as when I heard the next one, I didn't like it much.

You may as well get them in the order they were released -

Orbital (green) - a seminal work, essential really.
Orbital (brown) - the singles are awesome.
Snivilisation - not my favourite, but some cool tracks.
In Sides - I probably play this the most - for the full on widescreen high definition Orbital experience.

Forget all that, Bruce.

Just get Orbital (the second, brown album sometimes called Orbital II) as soon as possible!

I've just listened to 'Lush' and am now playing 'Halcyon + On + On' from this album. Has to be heard at about eleven o'clock on the volume dial of course.

It's giving me goosebumps, just so good. Makes me all nostalgic too.

OK thanks for that. I have been meaning to get some early Orbital. Subliminal messages!!?? What do they say..."kill children because they have no right to listen to music?"

"Eat more chips"?

Well Bruce, take Geogaddi as an example...

As track 16 says, 'The Devil Is In The Details'...

The cover has a hexagon, six figures, six demonic faces hidden in trees. Load it up, it's sixty six minutes and six seconds long.

The track '1969' is full of references to David Koresh/the Waco siege - 'although not a follower of David Koresh (his name is said backwards of course), she's a devoted Branch Davidian'.

Their albums have a mathematical precision. A lot of the tracks are a particular length, and there are loads of backwards/speeded up/slowed down pieces of dialogue.

Just google 'Boards of Canada' and 'subliminal'. I find it all pretty funny really.

Don't worry, it's just their mischievous sense of humour (isn't it?!) They're phenomenal records, that have a real effect on the listener.

Before I listened to BoC I was a mild mannered bespeckled accountant with a fine taste in model trains.

Post BoC

I'm going back to my Joni Mitchell collection Winker

Diccus,

You looked more relaxed in your Steely Dan phase.

Hi Brucie,

If you can get Geogaddi on Vinyl its a fantastic package 3 slabs of heavyweight vinyl, niice!

You could also try....

Plaid - Not For Three's
Clark - Body Riddle
Autechre's new Album in March but beware it might scare you on first listen
Deepchord presents Echospace - The Coldest Season
Thievery Corporation - Mirror Conspiracy
Two Lone Swordsmen - Swimming Not Skimming
Pole - Steingarten
Nathan Fake - Drowning In A Sea Of Love

And for some minimal German electro tinged electronica try..

Arpanet - Quantum Transpositions
Dopplereffekt - Calabi Yau Space.

And of course early Fourtet - Pause or Rounds. Try his lastest album Everything Ecstatic if your feeling brave though.

Indeed BoC do look like a scary lot..."it's in the trees..its coming"

Not for the feint hearted but more fun than anything. Thanks for all the other music suggestions. I shall order Geogaddi and report back.

Autechre, Autechre, Autehcre!

Either Incunabuler or Amber would probably be the best place to start. Autechre are great for good in depth listening sessions. Their latter stuff gets quite challenging... perhaps more 'intelectual' and requires a little more work & patientce but the treats are there.

I'd also recommend Aphex Twin (very varied) & Murcof (more ambient)

Interesting that everyone seems to be raving about Orbital. Got one album but never really clicked with it. Whats their best album?

boc - campfire headphase

also try

fsol - lifeforms
ulrich schnauss - far away trains passing by
fuse - dimension intrusion
aril brika - departure in time

Hmm.... Thats a tough one. Probably 'Come to Daddy' as it varies from the most manic ear shredding eg "Come to Daddy' to some lovely subtle tracks such as 'IZ-US' and it also has "Bucephalus Bouncing Ball" which should sound AWESOME on your system. You can also figure out if you can tolertate his silly nonsense ie. 'I will f#@k you up the bum hole & then I will sneak into your room.....'

Anyway, he's a bit of a mad genius although I suspect he's actually not really that mad at all and just likes to act it. Maybe just to irritate people like me... That's why I like Autechre more. They have a more thematic and consistent approach.

p.s. go find the 'Windowlicker' vid on youtube. Ha!!!
