In the absence of the real PT experts...
It depends what sort of thing you like...
My preferences in order...
Signify - proggy, rocky and it contains 'Waiting' which is one of my all time favourite songs.
Coma Divine - PT Live and brilliant. Excellent recording
Recordings (which is actually a collection of odds and sods) but is wonderful and has some of their most melodic work on it.
sky moves sideways very proggy, the re-mastered version contains a 37 minute version of the title track...
"In Absentia" and the new one "Deadwing" are much heavier than before. They have their good points but on the recent tour the new album hadn't been released so it made the gig hard work (I actually bought the CD at the concert).
If you like trippier stuff then the earlier ones may be for you (if you don't squirm at the adolecent humour).

seagull, what would be your preference ,CD/LP the albums on Diverse are very pricey i.e.£22.99/£29 .99.....jim
Posted on: 21 May 2005 by seagull
I'd go for the vinyl. I have Coma Divine on both and much prefer the LP.
They are beautifully packaged and pressed on on very good quality vinyl.
Have you tried the Freak Emporium? They may be cheaper there.

Too bad that two of PT's finest, Stupid Dream and Lightbulb Sun, are still out of print. Memo to Lava records: when are those reissues, originally promised for 2004, finally going to materialise?

FYI. Deadwing is now available on vynil from the Porcupine Tree shop at www.burningshed.com
'The Porcupine Tree online shop at Burning Shed now has stock of Deadwing in Red or Black Vinyl and as a DVD-A. Deadwing Special Edition is expected soon.
The double vinyl editions are in gatefold sleeves and feature extra tracks. The DVD-A edition, considered by SW to be the definitive way to experience the album, includes a wealth of extra features and several bonus tracks.'

Stephen

Mr Bennett, my credit card hates you!!!
I was put off the vinyl by the price on freak emporium (£34.99!!! for the black vinyl). But £16 + p&p seems reasonable to me...
I bought the CD at the Astoria gig, oh well!
I also got the sampler CD should be interesting.
p.s. In the absence of Mr Lees to pester you, when the new 'Fool' cd due?

Tim and I have recorded about half of the albums 'songy' tracks. We're just trying to get the guys together in the studio to do the drums and whole backing tracks. I'm hoping all the work will be finished July/August. There may be EP/Downloads of some older tracks soon too. Oh, and we have to decide on the label we want to release it on!

You can pass on the information to Nick!

Just picked up In Absentia ,bit heavier than I expected listened to it in the car home ,does anyone think bands like System of a Down were influenced by P.T. ....Jim
Posted on: 25 May 2005 by greeny
I wouldn't be suprized if System of Down had never heard of Porcupine Tree. I think SOAD influences are more likely: Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins etc.
Earlier PT is more proggy and a bit less heavy

I picked up my first PT album the other day, In Abenstia, and I must say I'm very very impressed. I'll have check out their other stuff, but I would add that anyone looking to get into PT for the first time can't go wrong with ...Absentia.
System of a Down is Nu Metal. PJ, Soundgarden, and the Pumpkins are really quite a bit different. As for influencing them, I'd say they get their political expressiveness from groups like Rage Against the Machine and the like. And as far as the Nu Metal scene, well for the popularity, SOAD pretty much did that by themselves.

Aric

Yep -I plan to be there. I have seen PT twice before at the Fillmore and they were quite excellent both times. What's more, Robert Fripp will be doing Soundscapes to open the show. I'm quite looking forward to it all.
