How to get depressed and then have a laugh and get depressed again

Posted by: bad boy dan on 27 July 2007

Tune into the Christian Religion channels on Sky, start from the top and work your way down, spend no more than a minute on each one, thats the depression bit.

This then turns into the Asian network, now i have to be carefull here for obvious reasons, but the entertainment shows are hillarious for all the wrong reasons, thats the laugh bit.

This then goes to the Islam channels, more religion more depression,i spend hours doing this and they give me the vote Confused

Lets start talking about multidimensional vector-based characterisation of hi-fi strengths and weaknesses - and how it supports the approach of consistent one-make systems...

quote:

You are a scared child in a scary world and you can't think for yourself,in this world today there are things that we can know and things that we can't,it is for science to show us the things that we can know.

Not scared at all - I am very secure, and so is my future.

quote:

Man invented God and now man has shown that God(as religion invisions him/her/it)does not exist, some of us can't face up to it.

Here's something you will like:

In the book: The Truth: God or evolution? Marshall and Sandra Hall describe an often quoted exchange between Newton and an atheist friend.

Sir Isaac had an accomplished artisan fashion for him a small scale model of our solar system, which was to be put in a room in Newton's home when completed. The assignment was finished and installed on a large table. The workman had done a very commendable job, simulating not only the various sizes of the planets and their relative proximities, but also so constructing the model that everything rotated and orbited when a crank was turned. It was an interesting, even fascinating work, as you can imagine, particularly to anyone schooled in the sciences.

Newton's atheist-scientist friend came by for a visit. Seeing the model, he was naturally intrigued, and proceeded to examine it with undisguised admiration for the high quality of the workmanship. "My, what an exquisite thing this is!" he exclaimed. "Who made it?" Paying little attention to him, Sir Isaac answered, "Nobody." Stopping his inspection, the visitor turned and said, "Evidently you did not understand my question. I asked who made this." Newton, enjoying himself immensely no doubt, replied in a still more serious tone, "Nobody. What you see just happened to assume the form it now has." "You must think I am a fool!" the visitor retorted heatedly, "Of course somebody made it, and he is a genius, and I would like to know who he is!" Newton then spoke to his friend in a polite yet firm way: "This thing is but a puny imitation of a much grander system whose laws you know, and I am not able to convince you that this mere toy is without a designer or maker; yet you profess to believe that the great original from which the design is taken has come into being without either designer or maker! Now tell me by what sort of reasoning do you reach such an incongruous conclusion?"

Maybe Man invented gravity too Winker

quote:

Every where science looks it sees a form of creation that is awe inspiring to a degree that makes your(6 days and one for rest man with a beard, pull out a rib merchant)look like a todler with lego.

Take a look at what I wrote to Fredrik on this. Genesis 1 is a parable with references to Relativism and Genetics - for a time of limited scientific understanding.

quote:

God exists for me,when i look a the pictuers of the billions of galaxies taken by Hubble, the periodic table of elements.

He is the creator that we can not fully characterise. Not human, but driven by love and the desire to create.

quote:

When i die i feel sure that will be the end, there will be no Heaven where i can rejoin my old friends or Hell, and i can live with that.

So you are saying you are a "pointless waste"???
Come on now!

quote:

What you are involved in which is "Born again Christianity" is nothing more than a business run by Assholes imported in from the US,i have spent time amongst them, there view of the Cosmos is akin to a seven year olds, they run as registered charities to avoid tax they are up to every trick in the book, the people at the top do not believe in God.

Actually they run registered charities in order to gain the tax added from donations. Again, there are good Churches and bad ones too - we even see that in the Bible when comparing the Church of Corrinth with the Church of Ephesians.

quote:

The other day i tuned in to a program on the religion channel called "Potters House" Potter is a 25 stone African/American who wears ridiculous suits, now Potter is a damn good preacher,he spoke about Tithing, should you give a percentage of your income to him based on Gross or Net,guess the answer.

I've already mentioned tithing, and that giving should be done in accordance with the heart and not under compulsion - the quote from the Bible was given earlier.

Have a good weekend,

At this great conference I believe they used a verse-by-verse points system in order to decide whether a Gospel/Letter is of Divine inspiration or dubious origin.

If the Bible was altered at any way during this point, then there would have been a noticable split among the 1800 different Churches - each taking away their own version. That of course did not happen - particular as the geneological evidence of old scriptures indicate consistencies before and after that date.

I'm looking that Winker

quote:
Don't underestimate the people at that time. Several of the Gospels were written by and with eye witnesses, and there was a strong tradition of verbal reinforcement of past events. We also see cross corroborated material by four different writers, one of whom is a renowned historian.

That may be so but in the information age we have many millions of photo's, videos, text, etc, a heck of a lot of additional evidence. This obviously makes a huge difference to what people "can" consider recording in the first place.

One other question. Who decides what is literal and illustrative instruction from the Bible?

Tithing was for the Jews. It was part of The Law which was supposedly dispensed of by christianity.

But then, christianity takes what it wants from Judaic Law and dismisses the rest as being only for Jews (which of course it is - gentiles are supposed to find guidance in the Noahich Law).

I guess though, that tithing within christianity keeps people in paid work and builds lovely looking million dollar churches

What is God? OK, here's my take on things.

Anyone remember the advert for (I think) Tetley's beer? Two hill walker types sat on a bench on a hillside looking over a fantastic Dales landscape with a village and pub at the bottom of the hill. Bloke says to his friend "Could drink it in all day", "Aye, couldn't you just" at which point they stand up; one walking off in the direction of the pub, the other to continue his walk and to take in more of the stunning views. Both were agreed, but on two completely different things. That's where my problem with religion starts. Your God and my God are almost certainly not going to be the same thing. And here I'm not talking about different religious faiths, just what God is. (And after all, God is a pretty important concept/character in all this.)

Andrew's " The 'thing' that this universe originated from." is a fairly standard take on things. Anyone hear of the Anthropic Principle? Proof that God exists if ever their was one. I am also pretty sure that there is a whole lot about our universe that we don't understand, yet. A.C Clarke's "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." is a nice way of putting that. I suspect that most cultures have their own creation stories. People are inquisitive and question and develop ideas and concepts.

I have no problem with the concept of God. But please, please, please, can we keep religion at the level of a hobby, 'cos at the end of the day, that's what it is.
