PS: Stereophile did a series on this about a decade ago; it was called something like 'the hifi house'. Perhaps it's on their web site.

I do not think there is a direct answer to your question. I am going to move house in the next few months and this subject has been on my mind. Problems are:
1- balancing up the placement of TV and speakers, with hi-fi kit and the sofas.
2- Do the speakers work best in free space rather then up against a wall -- can you get a room with a wall long enough, without a large interfering window?
The rooms in the mags seem to be slightly 'over-square' i.e. say 16' by 18' with the speakers firing down the long axis but I am not so sure this is always best. I like to have the TV in the same eye line as the speakers or at least not in the opposite corner. Some of the system pictures in the earlier threads seem to go with a TV in the corner and the speakers against the long wall.
I would start and plan the room on the basis of the way your kit works -- too big a room and new amplifiers as a minimum may be required.
