Name that Frame

Posted by: Andrew Randle on 14 March 2001

OK Lads n' Lasses,

Thought it might be a good idea to start a thread going along these lines:

What kind of product name would you give to Naim's new stands?

The possibilities so far are:

1) Naim Edsel
2) Naim Time Frame
3) Naim Frame
4) NAS 1/2/3/4/5/
5) abx251.4W

Any more? After the suggestions, we'll probably conclude with a poll to see which one we like best.

Then Naim can marvel at our creativity and then dutifully ignore it ('cos they've come up with something already big grin ).

I quite like the sound of the Naim Fraim. I don't know if this has been mentioned before but I also like the idea of the NA RACK. I like the pun.

The new speakers: what's wrong with WBL (Wannabee NBL)? Sorry - being facetious.

Apart from the latest cheaper variants, all Naim speaker names have had something to do with the unique design criteria behind the speaker. I like that since it allows me to introduce the speaker to potential customers, and give an idea behind the philosophy of the 'differentness' (or uniqueness) that is Naim Audio.

That said, if the philosophy is to be more mainstream, then a more conventional name would be suitable I guess. My problem with conventional names is that a name conjures an image in one's mind. If it's the right image, then you're alright, but if it's the wrong image, then this can hurt the speaker's saleability.

In my view, a wrong image can be caused in two ways:

1) Heavenly music comes from this speaker. But it's only a speaker. If the name gives one the idea of rose-tinted 'beautiful' music, then the speaker won't be able to compete with its own name!

2) Neutral, guarded name (and therefore sound). Well, why would I want to listen to that?

And of course, an image is something conjured in one's head. The image I get from a name could well be different from that conjured in yours. This is why I like the *BL naming convention - it's descriptive and it gives me (the dealer) a story to tell.

But you've solicited for ideas. Now I'm not au fait with the technology behind VIVO so I can't give a *BL suggestion. Here's some convention for you:

Vivace (Italian for Vivacious, you could twist it to Vivacio I guess)
Vista (View - as in "A Room With" also Italian)
Vento ('Wind' in Italian, may be used elsewhere?)
Viva (Italian expression of health as in 'Long Live xxx')
Vinto ("I've won" in Italian)
Finto ('Make believe', but also 'fake' - guess the language)
Gusto (Taste - as in good taste, the 'g' is said as in golf not as in ginger)
Giusto ('just' as in the good and the just - the g is said as in ginger not as in golf)
Gita (Ginger g - an outing)
Immerso (Spin on immersion obviously, but having been to the Intro, through the belief of the Credo, it's time to immerse yourself isn't it?:)
Immenso (literally Immense)

Aw heck - what do I know of naming names???

Regards,
Frank.

Here is the name:

The Naim Dome (a tribute to "Concerts under the Dome" and a reference to the dome-shaped top box)

As an alternative I suggest:

The Naim Filio (the new speaker as son of the NBLs)

allae is the name from naim for our new loudspeaker, pronounced al eye. Thanks to all of you for your help, maybe too much choice got us all in a spin.

Paul,

Difficult name and no obvious way to pronounce it. Risky IMHO. "À la Haye" in French, not well pronouncable in Dutch or it becomes something like the French "Allez". Not very strong IMHO. I've read better suggestions in this thread, but what's in a name. Any explanation as to why this name, what it means etc.

Ciao!

Comes from the root alliance/allied/ union/ friends and so on, we didn't like the spelling alli or ally so smart person here changed the i to the latin ae pronunced i and we have allae.
People eventually got to knack of naim in the end!! rather than naeeeem!

Haven't you ever heard the Niyam version? I've had many customers coming in for a listen to this 'Niyam' gear!

Jez,

The Allaes also have tapered cabinets and metal bases like the NBLs. The tweeter is apparently completely different.

A very nice design that sounds like a mini-scale NBL with a similar level of musicality. Is the separate box junction sealed or not?

Has a price been set?
Posted on: 16 May 2001 by Andrew Randle
Jez, it was said to be around £2k. A bit more expensive than the Credo it replaces. However, the performance advantage (from the Bristol demo) more than justifies the price difference.

Is there a release date for the Allae? I am hoping to use a pair at the Sound Organisation (York) to demo some CD players through. They're a sufficiently revealing 'speaker to do that. Hoping to do this in June/July.

The pevious name was to be "FRAIM" we thought it was too boring in the end
- Paul Stephenson

Found this old post from when Naim were coming up with a name for their new support. So what happened? Why did naim return to the "boring" Fraim moniker? Also did Keith Mattox get a 'cut' for being the first to suggest Fraim in the post?
