Cable from Sonos ZP90 to 82

Posted by: Flojoe on 18 July 2010

I am thinking of getting a Sonos system linked into my main hifi. A few questions if you please. Firstly will a product like RipNas give me a better SQ than a normal NAS and secondly, any recomendations for a cable from the ZP90 to my 82. Rest system DVD5, 82/HI-CAP/250.2, Spendor S6e. If I can save a few quid by just buying a normal NAS, then the rest can go towards a standalone DAC.

There should be no SQ difference between a RipNAS and an-other NAS; so long as there are no dropouts, etc. (which there shouldn't be with any NAS). The USP of the RipNAS is (as the name says) it also provides ripping functionality.

As for connecting the Sonos toy your Naim system. First step is using analogue (RCA) to a spare input on your preamplifier. A RCA (phono) to DIN cable will accomplish this. Moving forward for higher SQ you can add a DAC connected to the digital out of the (correct) Sonos player.

Eloise, thanks for the reply. Will the normal suspects of cable, chord, qed etc be ok, or do you have a specific one in mind ? Also, and its a big also,if I cant afford £2k for the ndac, do you have any recomendations of dac up to say £ 750

My current favorite cables are Chord but any of the manufacturers will do you a cable to suit.

As for DACs: in the upto £750 category there are some new DACs which would be worth a look/listen IMO. Musical Fidelty M1; Arcam rDAC and Chord Peach all look to be worthwhile demoing. Added to those would be Cambridge Audio DACMagic, Beresford's offering. If you're willing to go second hand then the likes of Benchmark and Lavry come into price range. One interesting second hand offering, though out of your £750 target, I saw recently was a Chord DAC64 MkII for around £1100 a good few years old but still (IMO) holds its own.

So many DAC's, so litlle time !!!! My problem is that down here in the west country most dealers only stock 1 or 2 DAC max so have to mostly go with recomendation on this one.

sonos/ripnas and ndac is a very good system ,z90 is cheap ,use iphone for control. the ripnas as a very good teac ripper . the sonos is fine for 16 bit till they sort out high res downloads. i prefer coaxial into ndac , although there is not much difference if i was honest by using opto.

sonos system very secure works perfect, just waitng for the best streamer/controller to come out

musical fidelity have a good history . before the ndac i had the xdac version 8 and it was v good. lots of rumours that the new £400 dac is very good value

The Chordette Peach at £800 is the upgrade from the Chordette Gem that I had on loan. If you can't afford the nDAC then this has to the one to audition.

In addition to the usual S/PDIF and USB inputs it has a Bluetooth input so you can send music from an iPod to it - the digital stream goes direct and the results on the Gem were truly amazing so no reason to think the Peach won't at least match that. This is a much better DAC than the Lavry and DAC-Magic IMHO and it is only when up against something of the quality of the nDAC that you notice a worthwhile improvement. Certainly one to try.

I chose the nDAC because it was made by Naim in Salisbury and sounds fantastic; if there was no Naim DAC then I'd be using one of the Chord models made in Maidstone. I've heard a few DACs and the Naim and Chord stand apart from the crowd.

If you wait a bit then there will be a superb DAC from Rega to add to the mix - I'm assuming it'll be quality because the Saturn is a great player and it'll based on the Saturn DAC.
