World Cup 2006 - A Non-Football Fans Thread/Safe Haven.

So, what are you going to do whilst the girlie men play with their balls this summer?

Switch off the TV/Radio? Unplug the interweb? Enjoy the empty roads whenever the English squad are on the pitch? Anything special planned?

You and your wife have my commiserations Nick. How long does the WC go on for? I'm hoping to be away in a jungle somewhere for the duration. Being unable to escape the braindeads at work is of course a torture. We must take comfort that the WC (very apt acronym I agree) is only every four years (hardly surprising that a trip to the WC once every four years should produce so much sh!t).

At least being on the other side of the world, it's all happening while I'm either sleeping, or out on the turps (I wish...).

Either way, I just don't give a damm about the WC. However being winter down here, the rugby season is in full swing, with the Super14 finals just about to begin.

Fredrik, I agree with your idea of watching the sky. It is cool, especially being able to show my sons the stars, and planets out there. It was a special moment to show him Jupiter last week.

Great weekend. Legoland was pleasantly uncrowded and we had a great day. I am delighted to say I avoided any football nonesense and the only reason I know who played on Saturday is because I bought a Sunday newspaper - well..I know who won, but didn't bother reading who they were playing. The bottom line though is that it works: Arrange to go out during the Tournament-of-the-Weak-Minded and have the company of only likeminded snobs.
There is an upside to everything. Smile

Cup final was good though eh Rasher Big Grin

(I'm sure I remember you saying you followed Liverpool?)
Posted on: 15 May 2006 by Rasher
SSsshhhhh.. Big Grin
No really Fisbey, I remember a while back you thought I liked football, but I really never have.
Anyway, what are you doing here? I thought that while this thing was going on we weren't allowed to talk to each other!

There's a world cup on then eh? Since everyone here is talking about football, maybe I should come back later Smile

Hey, 15 may wasn't world cup , it was err, some other cup. And Barcelona won. So world cup is only next month. You might want to know.

The latter posts in this thread show the insidiousness of football. No matter where you go, wherever you think there is some safe haven some braindead hooligan fan turns up to ruin everything.

Fcuk football and all its braindead supporters.

I live in Spain, but work in London. I also have no interest in football.
So why have I had 8 people asking my about my dilemma - who was I going to support, given the Arsenal against Barcelona game..?
Why do people assume that we are all lovers of 'THE game'
As with Erik, I shall be watching paint dry, because I get paid to do that sort of thing, and then will also avoid watching or getting involved in discussions about big brother.
I might even have a life..

On the average visit to the river (anytime after June 16th) I will get to see pheasants, partridge, greater, lesser & green woodpeckers, a goshawk, sparrowhawk, kestrel, (very occasionally an osprey) loads of kingfishers, plus many other tyes of birds, we have otters, (yes, wild ones) salmon leaping, sit in glorious countryside, alone or with a few friends, enjoy a bbq possibly.. now. Whats that about football??

Talking of Cardiff, if they move Dr Who again for the football grrrrr (ok I'll calm down as I know it's a big thing for some and I should know better and set +/- 1 hr on the PVR) BUT when it's a some stupid dance program - DELETE (Is the new EXTERMINATE).

Even after several BAFTAs and huge ratings it's like the BBC (or someone in the BBC) wants to kill it off - again.

BTW ROTF are the cybers still there and is Millingdales ice cream (http://www.millingdaleicecream.co.uk/) selling well......their coming , their coming, their coming............

I too have got a few cans in for the world cup. If I get bored of watching paint dry in the unlikely event of 'england' progressing past the second round and things get really exciting I'm going to buy a goldfish.

Better get that in the fridge, Erik or it won't taste as nice.

No, put the goldfish in the freezer. On a stick.
Very refreshing.

Come on Eric, it is not just about England, it is the chance to see the best footballers in the world strut their stuff.

Having said that,I have never seen a painters & decorators tournament. Coverage must be available on Freeview or one of the hundreds of Sky channels.

Have a great month, and do not forget to post pictures of your favourite wall.

Regards

LOL Nic,

I'm planning on posting before and after pics of various walls. I'm going to log the drying patterns on a chart for analysis. Some friends of mine are going to come round and we will wear england shirts, sit with a beer and watch all the action unfold. I'm looking forward to it.

Anyway I do sincerely hope you enjoy the world cup, after all it does only happen once every four years.

All the best,

Erik

Just as I was planning all sorts of fun excursions on the empty roads, my bloody wife has decided that she's "quite excited" about the stupid football and wants to watch it. There really is no way of understanding them.

Definition of Bad Timing:
Having Sky HD Installed 2 days before the World Cup begins.
Definition of Stupidity?
Informing your neibours, friends, relatives o the fact.
Now everyone and his dog are coming round to watch the footie on Saturday and neither my Wife nor I can stand it! Now if only the game had an oval ball...

Just extoll the virtues of the Arts Channel in HD and put the HD Arts channel on -

problem solved

you might offer to Sky + the football so that they can watch it after all the fuss is over

Football? Nah. Next friday I will be sat at the side of my favourite piece of water, along with about 6 friends. We will chat, laugh, watch the river, wildlife ( we even have wild otters), indeed we have even banned radios so that our peace is not shattered. Then I have the weekend at Hyde Park with Mr Waters et al, & the following weekend is the Goodwood Festival Of Speed. I 'should' arrive home on the Sunday just in time to see the end of the final. Thats if we dont accidently stop at the river on the way back. Think thats about got it sorted. Managed to miss otodays match by being in late from work.

Well the lunecy has kicked off at last. It is at traumatic times like this that one should spend time with family and friends (those not afflicted with the illness)and reflect on how lucky we are to have escaped the contagion. Hang in there chaps, resist the temptation to watch any matches and in time we will be free of this nonesense for another four years or until such time as an antidote is discovered. These may be dark days but there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
Posted on: 09 June 2006 by BigH47
I got a couple of extra jobs on account of most of the drivers wasting their day sitting on the M25.So I missed the first match. Saying that I wasn't intending to watch it anyway. I'll just listen to more music I think.
