World Cup 2006 - A Non-Football Fans Thread/Safe Haven.

So, what are you going to do whilst the girlie men play with their balls this summer?

Switch off the TV/Radio? Unplug the interweb? Enjoy the empty roads whenever the English squad are on the pitch? Anything special planned?

Dear Jon,

There is nothing much about him I like. He is not a man of honour, though he seems to have had a degree of success with the Team at times. Let's hope his last time in the World Cup is more successful still. But no there is nothing more stupid than being led by a journo than that. He is a fool, and no I don't like him. One had to hear it to hear the venom in his voice.

In practice I have had the misfortune to meet such people only once, and I never forgot it. As I say I went off him that day, if I was neutral before.

Perhaps I am too trenchant, but I have a very long memeory for this sort of thing. Maybe it is because there is an undertow of racism in the way fans behave so often that puts me off the game as much as anything else about it?

Fredrik

PS: Maybe one should expect no more. I wish we could though. I used ...

Hi Fred,

Thanks for your reply and I take your points. Believe me when I say I'm no apologist for Eriksson, but irrespective of all his other alleged misdemeanours and his blind loyalty to the faltering David Beckham, nothing I have seen or read about him has ever suggested (to me) that he was, as you call him, a racist.

I didn't see the interview you were referring to, however, and I guess I'd have to hear it to understand better your reaction.

Cheers,

Jon

Dear Jon,

I was on at either 8.25 or 7.26 on the Radio Fout Today Programme a few years ago now, and I just decided there and then that, though I was neutral about him before, this evapourated. Maybe I am being unfair, but it seemed fairly straight-foward at the time. Even the reporter, stumbled and just said something like, "Right, well yes, and I hope the match goes well." There was no follow through, and the interview ended. I don't suppose it would have been noted, but it made me think!

All the best from Fredrik

the 6m high wall along the staircase is now painted in a soft light green. It matches nicely with the wooden stairs and the other white walls.

Alexander,

I hope you had some friends round to enjoy the drying while having a beer or did you keep this pleasure to your self?

Erik, the operation was uneventful and was followed by a simple meal. I'll catch up in some other way.

But, a beer? That's one step removed from jumping up and down screaming on a tribune with face paint and a brazilian soccer T-shirt. Rather , a glass of wine. Not the common chardonnay that these ignorant would be elitists are consuming.
A savagnin rose would be acceptable.

A Chardonnay keeps the doctor away, but I prefer a nice chilled Sancerre myself. I liked the cartoon Winker
