Mark Knopfler- Get Lucky

Posted by: mike/dallas on 18 September 2009

I just received the new Mark Knopfler cd, Get Lucky and it is an excellent effort. It has the usual tasty guitar licks and a Celtic vibe reminiscent of the Chieftains. Highly recommended.

I have to agree. I have been playing it a fair amount this week and finding it very enjoyable.

Thanks for that, Mike, as I love Mark Knopfler!! I'll buy this this weekend.

Just got this - a good album full of growers methinks. Remembrance Day and So Far from the Clyde are excellent, but very reminiscent of Andy Latimer's playing.
If you like this Celtic-influenced style, you have to try Harbour of Tears or a Nod and a Wink from Camel.

Excellent album. I am disappointed with the marketing strategy however . . . Vinyl only available in a l/ed box et at around £70. Muse have done the same with their excellent new album, both would have had my credit card flexing at around £25-30, but not at that price . . . Frown

Absolutely bloody money grabbing marketers.

I think you can buy the vinyl without the poker chips and digital media, but it's still expensive. I might have been interested if it was 45rpm like Shangri La

It has been released in the US, vinyl only/normal price this week so hopefully not too long until that happens here.

Hi all,

I tell you what I noticed, as I bought the edition with the DVD as well.

The DVD is great as it shows Mark Knopfler and some other dude showing us round their recording studio. Mark Knopfler as much as I admire and love his talent seems pretty dull as a person!! On top of this there are fascinating things that I discovered from the DVD. I regard Dire Straits music and Knopfler's solo stuff as really high fidelity and love it, but the recording studio video suggested to me that the sound THEY experience is far different to how it comes out in a quality hifi listening room. The speakers they use to control the balance and surround look really poor and I cannot see them sounding that great.

These are just my thoughts and if any others who've seen the DVD wishes to comment, I look forward to reading!!!

Regards,

Jon

Great album and that was an excellent concert last Saturday night on the German radio network WDR.

Jon,

I have to buy this DVD to take a look at the recording studio. I received the LP three days ago and I'm stunned by the quality. I can hardly find an LP that can match this sound. It's not difficult to predict that "Before gas and TV" will become one of the favorite demo tracks of many dealers.

Regards,

Emil

But is the vinyl version really worth the price tag?!!!

I recommend the US edition of Reprise Records, 2 x 180g LP for $39.99.

Well I have bitten the bullet and bought the 2LP Deluxe Gatefold Set on the Warners label.

Should hopefully arrive early next week. Really looking forward to hearing it as I have been playing this on Spotify quite a bit!!

I generally like Mark Knofler but I bought "Kill to Get Crimson" on vinyl and I was bitterly disappointed with the music - very ordinary and MOR "lift" music IMO.

I'm quite tempted by this new album, but not sure I want to lash out on a vinyl copy.

Tony,

One word - Spotify. Then you can make a call on the vinyl. FWIW the CD is excellent.

I can listen from the first to the last song of "Shangri-La", which is not the case with the last two albums. On the other hand in "Get Lucky" Mark Knopfler's voice is more vivid, reminding me of his Dire Straits times.

yeah I've found some of his pieces to be "nice" but not inspiring. Getting back to that Dire Straits sound would be a good thing.

Couldn't agree more.

I just wish Mark would call up John Isley, Alan Clarke and Guy Fletcher and get the Straits out on the road again. The solo stuff is ok (excellent in places) but somewhat soporific.

I'm going to put my neck on the line here and say I love this vinyl album.

It is the first solo Knopfler I have bought and after a few listens a really rate it.

There are some really good tracks and the sound quality is stunning.

Very enjoyable!!

I've listened again this evening - some of the tracks - the first and the title track in particular - are outstanding. Also watched the DVD - all that analogue stuff and obviously a team of musical masters who just take so much care.

Took me a couple of listens but I think it is his best solo disc and the sound quality well, excellent.
