Thumbs up for Wi-Fi

Now that we've installed Wi-Fi at home I can listen to great tunes and surf the web, at the same time!
No one can accuse me of spending too much time in front of the PC and not in front of my SBL's.
Wi-Fi doesn't effect anyone's sistem does it?
Jay
Yeah...well it seemed like a good idea at the time.

Perhaps the only system it might affect is your own body - the modern house is becoming more akin to living in a microwave oven - apart from the WiFI you have:
Blue tooth transmission from your mobile phone to the PDA and PC
The mobile phone especially when transmitting
The various transmissions from radio, TV, police communication systems, radar stations, car keys, satellites transmitting to the earth -
Back ground emissions from TVs, mains cables, digital displays, computers etc etc.
Non of of the above are very high power - but a very large number of low numbers do add up to a high number.
Should we worry about it - perhaps not

Jay - I should add - I do not know - I have only observed what happens to meat when it is placed in a microwave oven for a few minutes <g>
and also stories told by an ex neighbour who worked on erecting microwave links - he claimed that they used to put meat pies in the wave guuides to warm up the pies. I believe he died of cancer.

I now do my accounts, waste time here, do the odd ouverdue job etc, all on my laptop in my music room listening to my system. It used to be that I would have to use my PC which is in the office at the top of the house, and a bit lonely. I do find that the signal isn't as strong throughout the house as I would have hoped, so may be I need some boosters somewhere, but overall, I couldn't be without it now. I live opposite a park, so I'm looking forward to the summer when I can grab a beer, sit in the park in the sunshine with the kids running around, and carry on.

Like all good musak and electronics, WI-FE sorry WI-FI works on frequencies. The current standard (Anorak bit coming) is 5.0 GHz for 8012a 2.4-2.5Ghz for 8012.b/g, most speakers and hi-fi electronics should not be affected. However, if you have remote controls, portable telephones, baby monitors, and microwave ovens these use the same transmission frequency (2.4-2.5 GHz).
So not to mention the baby in a microwave joke, these are the only items that may be directly affected with any airborne interference.
Scenario: WI-FE is talking to friend on portable phone whilst cooking a delicious microwaved meal, baby starts to scream, and someone turns on the TV/HI-FI/Video to block out the sound. Then you will be able to transfer a 10kb file within a week +/- 2 days.
My name is taken from lowest region of the world, a dank, gloomy pit, surrounded by a wall of bronze, and beyond that a three-fold layer of night; it is one of the first entities to exist in the universe; primarily the prison for defeated gods and a place of punishment for sinners-just like my sense of humour!

Amd of course, if you have standard WiFi security implemented, it's real easy for your computer and data to get hijacked.

Tat's right your neighbour/kid 200ft down the street can have a WI-FI finder.
Its amazing how many large bore exhaust cars will sit outside your house once this gets known!

I just turned on 128-bit WEP, and allow access to only those MAC addresses I give permission to. I would turn off SSID broadcast, but my SD Wifi card gets confused if I do, so I just made sure I changed the default name.

I'm using 802.11a in my house (a bad idea) but I'd be fairly certain that nobody would be able to use a wifi finder on that - the 5GHz band is licensed (as opposed to the 802.11b/g band which isn't so restricted) and so getting any kind of accessories for 802.11a is both expensive and the choice is greatly reduced.
802.11a would be my choice for a large open-plan office, but it isn't so great at dealing with different levels and doors and walls - basic wave theory I believe...
