Dual centre speakers for n-Vi?

Posted by: emyyl88 on 21 July 2008

I wonder if anyone has tried connecting a pair of centre speakers to the n-Vi using NACA 5. And how does it sound? I guess one would join the cables from the two speakers before it went into the centre speaker terminal of the n-Vi.

The reason I am thinking of this is that I use a pair of vintage JBL speakers as front speakers. I have a chance to get a set of smaller JBL speakers of similar vintage that I can use as centres. If it's not advisable, then I'd just use one of them and keep the other in the closet.

Just use one - simple Smile

Be careful - you could fry your amp!

What you want to do is a parallel connection of two speakers to one amp. In this configuration, the electrical resistance will be halved. e.g. two 4 Ohm speakers would give a load of only 2 Ohm for the amp...

I googled and found this diagram for explanation:

Definitely don't want to fry the amp. Thanks for the lesson on the halving of resistance. I seem to recall studying that in secondary school science! Will stick with one centre Smile

Or connect them in series and double the resistance so two 4 Ohm speakers would become 8 Ohm.

If you connect so each speaker is connected to the + and - of the amp you will get 2 ohm

But if you connect so amp + goes to + of first speaker then the - from that one goes to the + of the next and the - from the second speaker goes to the - of the amp.

(Tried to draw this in text but spaces were removed so didn't work)

I did do something similar in the past with IBL's lying on their sides with tweeters nearest to center but each driven by the L&R of a NAP140 and it sounded very good (better than a single IBL with SBL L&R).

But the ideal is to have an identical (in sonic signature) center to your L&R. I now have an SBL LCR and IBL rear and that's even better. Guess it could be even better if they all had the same serial number (but that's impossible)

Would love to use the spare SBL as a middle rear but a spiral staircase prevents me.
