Usually the longest I would listen would be to a very long piece of music like the Saint Matthew Passion - something over three house long, but I usually take an hour off in the middle, and come back after a walk, and general refreshment.
If the music is less serious then it can go on - on very rare occasions - for longer.
Mostly I find about two hours, with a break at mid point, of straight concentration is the optimal maximum, but sometimes I listen for perhaps only twenty minutes in wonderful concentration, and then do not try to make the experience last longer when the piece of music ends!
If anyone comes into the room, then by definition the music goes off, and "host mode" goes on! Occasionally I listen with a friend, or friends, but they would be listening in the same way of comcentrating without chit chat.
What is quite hard for me is to listen to music with other people away from my home, and they want to talk!
In my view it simply means that I turn the music off in my mind, but in my experience it is impossible to hold a good conversation while attending to music, and impossible to attend to music well enough to enjoy it, while holding a conversation.

I have the luck of having days off during the week when Mrs HHD has to work. Not being one for day time television I can often have the pleasure of a day (9-5) of music whilst reading a book. This obviously is not more than once a week and has to be split around usual household chores (but still with music on in the background).
Oh lucky me.

Mike,
Did you used to listen to two or more pieces at once rather than just one?

I "listen" to as much music as I can because I find it a stress release but mainly a joy to experience as much variety as I can but technically its not the same listening as Mike & George participate in.
Dean..

The stereo is never off, unless it's for a small fix of TV. But when I work at home it's on dawn to beyond dusk.
If I'm just sitting and listening, about an hour or so, usually when the wife is out and lesser mortals are surfing the internet for satan's snaps.

....Some bands / albums work better over long listening periods than others.
... For example I can listen to the Allman Brothers (esp the live stuff from their heyday) for hours late at night, and DSOTM is a classic "From start to finish" album.
Any amount of Steely Dan will be played for hours on end at any time!
