Upgrade amp or CD

People in the know - I need advice.
I have 3.5/FC, 32.5/HC/160(180 spec)/SBL's.
I was going for the CDX2, without the XPS at this stage, but have come across a bargain pair of old 135's that I am tempted by. I would allow for them to be fully serviced, but is this what I should be doing? I am always getting distracted from my initial intentions.

I may not be "in the know", so to speak but I do have a pair of 135's and wouldn't change them for anything, except perhaps a NAP500. As you seem to be on the upgrade path anyway and assuming they are the bargain you say they are, you should not let an opportunity pass you by which you may regret later. My advice is to go for it and delight in the fact that your SBL's will be now be driven, passively at least, optimally. Go for the source in your next upgrade. In addition, if you ever change your speakers, your 135's will drive a variety of options, even NBL's. Regards, Neil

Cheers Neil. I know I will probably end up getting them because I generally can't help myself, but I feel I'm doing all the upgrading from the back - the SBL's being the latest addition. It seems a shame to miss out on the legendary 250, but the 135's are not much more than an olive 250. With the sale of the 160, we are only talking a few hundred all in, so its a no-brainer really - but the front is going to have to wait longer - and its going to need that more than ever!!

While it's hard to pass up a bargain, I think you have 2 weaknesses - both the CDP and your preamp have been replaced by improved models.
A mullet hairdo is pretty ugly; a mullet hifi sysetm generally offends your thoughts but not your senses. I'd probably go for the 135s, but I'd be prepared to find myself 'forced' to improve the front-end, too.
Can you take your CDP upgrade funds and swing the 135s and a Rega P3? My tongue is firmly in my cheek, but....

Yup. If you are happy with the way your SBL's sound right now, prepare to be blown away. You won't believe how much better your SBL's will sing with a couple of big boys kicking them along. Sort out the rest later.

Go for it rasher,
The 135's will obtain more control over the SBL's and give you more clout, however they will show up the dificiencies of your CD player.
If you can live with it buy the 135's as you can always upgrade the CD player at a latter date.
If it all goes wrong you will always be able to re sell the 135's at virtually the same price as you purchased them for. So what have you got to lose?

Pretty unanimous I’d say. I appreciate all your comments which put it in the post as far as I’m concerned. I will need to do the right thing with the player and the pre-amp, but both are on the list. I have also been sneeking a peek at 82 prices, but it’s the CDX2 which I will definitely make priority after the 135’s.
