HDX Client Desktop - ?
Posted by: AJC on 04 May 2009
I have an HDX and succesfully run the client desktop software on my desktop in another room, using the same network hi-fi that the HDX is running on. This works great except it's in another room.
So I would like to use my laptop the same way in the listening position in the room where the HDX is.
But even though I have succesfully installed the Client Desktop software and the laptop is running on the same wifi network as the desktop it can't find the NAIM HDX when it searches.
I can't understand the issue as both the desktop and laptop are using the same naim software, the same network both by wi-fi and yet one finds the NAIM HDX the other doesn't any ideas?
All the dealer keeps saying is the laptop must be "flash enabled", but it does run adobe flash - or is this something else
Thanks for any help anyone can suggest

You cant run desktop client on 2 machines at the same time.

Thanks but even when I disconnect the Desktop PC the laptop still can't find it. Do I have to un-install the software from the desktop first to make the laptop find the HDX?

I have the same issue. Interested to hear the rundown on this.

Just un-installed the software from the desktop PC, still the laptop couldn't find the HDX.
Then I re-installed the software on the desktop PC and it didn't need to search for the HDX.
I guess that this means that the HDX and the desktop are "paired" and whilst they are nothing else can "pair" with the HDX.
Ok so how do I "un-pair" the Desktop PC as disconnecting does not do this neither does uninstalling the software?

Check the TCP/IP range of your laptop.
both the subnet mask and the address need to be in range.

even if they are the the same network they might not be in the same range.

Patrick How do I check the TCP/IP?

my computer. network TCP/ip settings.

are both computers DHCP or static? Is the HDX static or DHCP?
Posted on: 04 May 2009 by AJC
What is DHCP?
Posted on: 04 May 2009 by Patrick F
It is a way a "computer" gets a IP address to go out to the internet/intranet.
The HDX ship's DHCP. Did you dealer set it up or did you do it yourself?

I set it up myself

Is the wireless network set up with the same subnet as the wired? i.e. if the subnet mask is 255.255.255.0, are the first three numbers in the ip addresses of each device the same?
I don't know much about the HDX, but some protocols struggle to find devices on different subnets.

Connect your laptop using an Ethernet cable first, then scan.
Once the Desktop Client finds your machine, you can connect–then disconnect (keep client open), and remove the Ethernet cable.
Join the wireless network and re-connect, and you should be fine.
Some wireless network routers and configurations are better than others, but this method seems to work consistently.

Thanks David I shall try tonight

Oh-and I should qualify this–if the IP address of the HDX has not changed, you may re-connect wirelessly, consistently without having to re-attach the physical cable.
Many wireless routers or access points block the broadcast from the Desktop Client scan, which is not experienced when using a wired connection.

David,
I am now connected to the network on my laptop by ethernet (not wifi) still it does not detect the HDX?

Are you running Vista? If so, you need to run the DTC as the administrator.

Would getting an HDX to work in a an existing home network, including a wireless laptop client, be part of the normal Naim dealer "installation" agreement?

OK my laptop is supplied by my employer and the IT department are fairly sure that the firewall installed in their standard software is blocking the connection to the HDX. I will try with a different laptop tonight which has no firewall (or at least can be temporarily switched off). Thanks for all the responses.
Once I have confirmed this my intention is to but the smallest netbook with XP or Vista with wi-fi so I can run the Desktop Client software from the listening position
thanks

Using a different laptop worked, it is definetly a firewall issue
Thanks
