Vinyl to Hard Disk (24/96)
Posted by: Jack on 20 January 2009
I've been in the process of transferring much of my vinyl to CD for a number of years but more recently just to hard disk so I can play through my hard disk system.
The question is whether it is worth recording vinyl onto hard disk in 24/96? I have always done this previously because I used to undertake lots of noise and crackle reduction etc and assumed it would be better to do this at higher resolution before dithering down and burning to CD (improved quality).
However, the noise reduction process takes so much time I have more recently just transferred the vinyl straight over to hard disk. Given the vinyl source is not 24/96 am I wasting my time writing out at the higher resolution? Is there any merit in my previous approach should I wish to undertake the reduce noise process etc?
Thanks
Jack

Thanks ference,
Does one needs to be a geek to perform the transfer from vinyl to HD perfectly?
Does various ADC vary the results ?
Interesting you are using the Lavry AD.
Actually I find the Altmann ADC the most interesting and special, even it is 16 bit only, the Lavry and the Myteks are very good, just a little bit different and for different environment, one can be very happy with the Mytek too, which is a bit cheaper than the Lavry or the Altmann. I am using a Korg MR-1000 too, it works very well, but nowadays I started to prefer the 96k against the DSD, as I need to convert the 128x DSD recordings of it to PCM to play back from my server. The Korg portable recorder is far the easiest to use, if you can use a VHS recorder you can use it too. There is a new Korg, the MR-2000S, which is even more comfortable for recording LPs (it has RCA connectors!), however, I did not have a chance to try it yet.
The Altmann Creation ADC:
very analogue, a bit rounded, tonally perfect (for me, in my system), colors the incoming sound just a little bit, but on a very inviting way, Very good PRAT. RCA input - battery power supply - integrated limiter (quite high quality).
Lavry AD10:
As analogue as the Altmann, but more resolution, more dynamics, more honest to the original than the Altmann, but some could prefer the more cinemascope nature of the Altmann. PRAT is like the original, nothing lost or added. XLR input and very transparent volume settings
Mytek 96DAC:
More space around the musisicans than the Lavry, but a bit flatter texture and a bit hyped resolution but quite listenable, not tiring. More "American" sound - if you know what I mean. It is the "slowest" of the three. XLR input.

Dear ferenc,
Priceless words! Thoiugh I have not heard the other two, I think your assessment of the Lavry fits exactly with my experience, if that is worth anything. I can see no reason to worry about investigating other options now - not the least because of the cost, but up till now I have not found a digital piece that gave a significantly more listenable and musically pleasing result, and even then at far more money in very high class CD players rather than separate DACs.

Have you even followed this thread or just scour for you trigger word? He's talking A2D, not D2A. It's a completely different piece. Take an anti every opportunity pill and chill. We're all happy that it's good enough for you.
Even a TC does a reasonable job at this (front) end. There are certainly important differences but not as large as the playback side. The program that you use also matters.

Yes, I am about the ADCs. The DACs are different story. The TC Konnekts are very good for the price, if you can live with the 1/4" connectors, you can digitize your LPs up to 192k/24 bit in a very high quality. The Konnekt Live even has a DSP based RIAA, mainly for DJs, but can not be too bad for the price
I have a feeling that at the next CES there will be more audio servers with on-board ADCs.

Dear js,
I read the whole thing first, but that does not mean that by the end I did not get it wrong.
Apologies, to ferenc for reading his post entirely from the wrong end of the telescope, and making a reply that makes no sense of what he was actually trying to say!
Aplogies to js. I did not intend to raise your blood pressure. But no, I do not have the faintest idea how I could work on trigger words, without reading the whole thing through, as I am not a computer! But mistaking a reading is possible.
Best wishes from George

Black pot and kettle time??
I believe, please excuse me George for speaking for you, he was saying ferenc's review of the Lavry ADC hints at the same qualities George loves in the DAC.
I think his point is that it is interesting to hear that fact.
George follows every thread, in every possible universe.

ooops.
I did not see George had already come to his own defense.
Who is not reading the entire post now???
I actually only scan these threads looking for trigger words indicating someone saying anything negative towards, about, or alluding to George, F Frisk, or any other secret identity of this rare man.
I have an old man crush on GFFJ.... ill admit it.

No apologies required and I really did mean the bit about being happy that you're so happy with your Lavry. I just found it humorous, not upsetting. Just a bit of a poke and laugh. My apologies also if it sounded like more. Reading it again, I can see how it does. We all make mistakes.quote:Originally posted by GFFJ:

Dear js,
Understood and thanks. It would be a shame to risk falling out over a mistaken reading wouldn't?!

Same here. I've forgotten but I think you use a MAC/Itunes. If you have the opportunity, you should try the Wadia IPOD transport/coax with an uncompressed file. Better than I expected. A bit smooth in absolutes but not bad at all. It will give the MAC setup a run. Same with standard PC's.quote:Originally posted by GFFJ:

Dear js,
I will send you an email later this evening about all this, rather than me further derail this thread.
Apologies to Jack, the Opening Poster.

ferenc,
Thanks.
So, how do they compared to the nagra?
I've no doubts that all those pro AD are good for the job, but then what's the advantage of having a Nagra aside from being portable?
Any sonic advantage to that?
This is why I wish Naim would come up with a decent AD.
js.
Have you tried any other AD other than Nagra?
Any differences to others?

I do not have much experience with a Nagra unfortunately, so I can not really compare. I wish I have

It seems noone does.
All the recos from others are for non Nagra kit and they haven't compared to it either.
I am familiar with their domestic offerings (amps/preamps/cd players etc.. ) but I know nothing of their professional recording kit except producers I worked with always put it in for a rental if the production budget is big enough to accommodate it. ( it must mean something )

Wanna find out what that something is.
It's a bit tricky for me to get an audition of all these pro gear. ( I guess it can be possible If I really wanted to )
I don't think there is any comparison reviews anywhere.

Kuma,
You are welcome to try my Nagra V in Montreal.

Manu.
Thanks for the offer, but it would be meaningless without others to compare it against.
I am a sucker for a Nagra's industrial design. I still have a PLL even tho there is absolutely no use for it.
