News of the HMV sale

Posted by: Chunny Nochubb on 27 September 2002

Was in Oxford Street last night and saw that HMV had just started their “Biggest sale ever”.
I am itinerant music buyer, and didn’t really have my buying boots on last night but strolled in for a quick look.

It seems that they had quite a number of recent CDs going for between £5 to £9. Didn’t stay too long downstairs in the mainstream rock/pop area, as it was too noisy, so can’t give any details on bargains there but in the Country/Folk section which is where I buy over half my music from these days, they had “Blue Horse” by The Be Good Tanya’s for £8.99, which was £5 less than I paid for it, and they have been quite big over here this year and touted by various BBC radio presenters such as Andy Kershaw, Bob Harris, Nick Baraclough etc.,
Only stayed about 10 mins. in all, as I had not been allowed a late pass and ended up buying a full price CD, but there you go.

I did pick up their magazine HMV Choice, which is their guide to “Specialist music”, that is anything that is not on the rock/pop floor. It is divided into sections – Classical – Jazz- Country – Easy – Roots-Soundtracks and reviews a lot of new releases and as it is free represents remarkable VFM. The downside was that there were no reviews of any of David Hasselhoff’s works anywhere.

Vinyl fans – Sorry didn’t see any, and can’t find any reference to it on their web site.

Pretty good sale. Went down this lunchtime, picked up tom waits for 4 quid, Lynch's 'Lost Highway' and Vampyros Lesbos DVD's for a tenner each.

Apparently 'Vampyros Lesbos' is the kind of film you watch with a tissue in one hand...so sad it brings a tear to the eye.

I went in to the Oxford St shop on Thursday, and it was a total bun fight! You literally could no move in the entrance area where the Fat Boy Slim CDs for £3 were.

Plenty of cheap CDs / DVDs / Videos but as reported, no knock down vinyl. Boo!

Tower Records in Picadilly had loads of dance 12" for 99p - £1.99, so I bought a few to try out.

For DVD fans, www.hmv.co.uk also has the sale, and in the past, I have bought DVDs £5 cheaper from the net than the store.

Must say that I cant stand the place. Went in today and came out without anything £16-18 quid a pop for non chart/sale items is well OTT. The only good thing about HMV is they will (often grudgingly) take an experimental purchase back and swap it

Give me Fopp, Selectadisc and Reveal records (or 101/play online)anyday

Talk about rip off.

I was well excited to hear a boarders was opening in watford.

Took a peak last week, a popular CD such as Dark Side If the Moon is 18 quid!

Jesus be gods what a fricking joke.

I totally agree with Paul on this - the HMV on-line store is excellent and there's usually bargains to be had somewhere. It is a tad slow though so broadband helps!

In the UK Amazon and MVC are both good too and have sale offers on most of the time, but CDNow in the US has by far the best and most informative site of the lot.

A couple of years ago, it was lots cheaper to buy from CDNow even with the carriage costs, but sadly that no longer holds true. The savings are now modest, probably because UK prices are reduced by the likes of HMV - long may it continue big grin
