AV2 and non Naim Pre Amp

Posted by: Neil Gilbert on 13 December 2007

I have until today run a 5:1 system consisting of AV2/300/145/200. Front duties were handled by the 300 via a 52.

Unfortunately I have had to downsize and have replaced the 52/Super and 300 with a Dynavector pre/power.

I have set this up with phono and CD but cannot work out if it possible to have a 5:1 system incorporating the AV2 and Dynavector pre using RCA connectors. I think I need to have a special connection between output 3 of the AV2 and a input on the preamp. My previous connection was din to din and no longer any use.

Hope this is reasonably clear and any help appreciated.

Thanks

Neil,

Don't know about 'input 3'.

Take the main channel out to an input of your choice on the preamp.

Set the pre to a position you'll remember easily - 12?

Use the noise generator to set the levels on the AV2.

You're good to go.

I use a Chord DIN to stereo RCA cable.

I do this from the AV2 via my EAR864, no probs.

The DIN to RCA phono interconnect needs to be wired from the record output quadrant of the 5-pin DIN.

The output on DIN input socket 3 tracks the AV2 volume–but I believe there may be an RCA phono output that also does this (must check).

Does the Dynavector have a unity gain input? If not its a case of changing the volume each time on the "AV" input

You just need to either:-

-modify your existing yellow banded lead to have RCA's on the non-banded end, at your own risk

Or

-obtain a 5pin din to RCA lead from us, via your dealer (that is correctly wired for use on AN3 output)

I realise that I can connect as before by simply substituting the din to din lead from the av2 to 52 with a din to rca lead to my new pre.

My query was whether any of the rca connections at the rear of the AV2 could mimic this connection as I have two rca to two rca interconnects available.

Thanks

Try the RCA phono record out, just in case....

I have a feeling that tape out is a fixed output level.

Whilst you could use it in this mode, you would have to compensate accordingly with the volume on the Pre-amp, as the AV2 would not control this output when the vol was adjusted.

–yep, fixed output (560R buffer) from analog inputs only.
