Calling classical lovers - HFC Forum takeover

Posted by: tones on 17 December 2002

Some time ago, the classical enthusiasts at HFC started an FAQ thread about getting into classical listening. This has developed to such an extent that one of our contributors suggested that we should take over the forum by swamping it with useful posts , thereby cutting out all the endless, pointless verbiage as to the merits of various brands of equipment, supports, cables, etc., etc., etc. We've just branched out with a subsidiary thread on Handel's "Messiah" (there's a discussion of the Christmas Oratorio in the main thread). Another one of the guys is working on the Bach Passions and Bach harpsichord music. As a casual observer here, I see lots of knowledgeable folk (I own no Naim - in fact, I'm ashamed to confess that I've never even heard Naim equipment!). But the object of it all is music! So, how about coming across and giving us the benefit of your knowledge and opinions? The more the merrier! I've certainly learned an enormous amount from these threads and my "must listen to" list of music continues to grow alarmingly...

Regards,

no thanks

Thanks for the invitation. However as far as I'm concerned your attempt to siphon off traffic won't work out. There's not a whole lot of classical posters on the Naim forum, but at least they know what they're talking about, and they have some passion. On your HiFiChoice forum there is AFAICT one (1) thread that has some substance (which Beethoven piano sonatas should I buy, which is not quite the same as have you heard any interesting 20th century chamber music lately?), but basically there is more than a hint of Nuño-ism about the place. And that FAQ place is just unbearably patronising. Who are these people to explain that "Brahms hated Tchaikovsky" if they aren't aware that this kind of reductive popularizing has already been done to death? You're the guy who talks about "Herbie von K" right? Please. To me it looks like a clear case of the Deaf leading the Blind, sorry.

Yup, that's me, OK. Sorry that such a reference to the ol' (late) Herbs bothered you so. No, no attempt to siphon off traffic, just a friendly invitation, which need not be taken up, if not wanted. I remembered a previous classical thread here, and since quite a lively exchange of views has started over at the other place, I thought I'd mention it here. I personally have no enormous technical knowledge of classical music - I only love the stuff. And if you think that there are no folk over there who are lacking in the knowledge and passion stakes, I think you need to read a wee bit more carefully. Anyway, that's your decision. No permanent harm done, eh? The world as you know it hasn't come crashing down, has it? I wish you happy listening.

Ross,

Please... enough "reductive popularizing".

You will have us imagining "Herbie" celestially high-fiving "Antoine" before you are granted permission to spin your favourite (Bruckner) 7th.
