Barry Diament and the first 4 Led Zeppelin cds

Posted by: Luxen on 15 July 2008

Hi all!!

A friend supplied me with the first four Zeps, mastered by a certain Barry Diament.

What is this about???
My friend says they are better than the "normal ones"...

I have the remastered collection box (grey box).

Are those of Barry Diament really considered the better mastered???

Opinions?

Yes, some folks think the Diament-mastered Zeppelin CDs are better than the Page/Marino remasters. (BTW, the original Led Zeppelin IV was mastered by Joe Sidore IIRC.) I prefer the originals generally, as the remasters seem bright; and the distortion on the mastertapes (particularly on Led Zeppelin II) seems nastier on the remasters as well.

For more info about this, check out and search the Steve Hoffman Forum online, in Music Corner. Barry Diament is a member and frequent poster there, so you can get info about the early Atlantic CDs from the man himself.

Two Barry threads at the same time - do I sense a Renaissance?

The whole LZ back catalogue are scheduled for release 10th Sep on SHM CD,
either as a complete box set, or as individual albums.
The SHM CDs I've heard so far have been sonically excellent to my ears.

IMHO they are better than the remasters. You would notice the difference if you turn them up loud. The reamsters hit major distortion well before the Diaments. Also they ain't ear bleeders like the current versions.
