Your greatest showman?

Posted by: NB on 10 November 2002

I have just read Roy's post on the top 100 number ones of all time. Queens bohemian Rhapsody was voted the number one, number one of all time.

In the replies Paul asks the question "why did Queen do so well?". One of the reason is that they were fronted by one of the greatest musicians and showmen to have lived.

If I was asked the question who was the greatest showman freddie would get my vote.

Who would be yours and why?

One thing that comes to mind is that truly great showmen or -women (in terms of energy, perfectly-exercised movements and sheer energy on stage) often end up being the wealthiest, most famous and adored artists, whether their artistic achievement is relevant or not - here I must admit that it helps, though.

My personal list of favourites kind of proves this statement:

Rock: Freddie Mercury, Mick Jagger (Keith plays his role too), Bono, Peter Gabriel, Bruce Springsteen, Angus Young, Prince. I should add David Lee Roth but PUKE. Unfortunately, no woman comes to mind, and surely not Madonna. [Male] listeners have apparently limited female onstage professionalism to sexyness.
Jazz: Miles Davis, by far. And his good nose for clothes !!! What we saw, most of the time, though, was the backside of his trousers.
Classical: Leonard Bernstein, Herbert von Karajan, Georg Solti, Maria Callas, Luciano Pavarotti (this is a good example as he was a truly bad singer except in his early years, when he really deserved his fame).
Some sportspeople also knew how to capture the masses: Ilie Nastase, Connors, Hulk Hogan, Alberto Tomba, Pelé, Maradona, Giacomo Agostini and my personal favourite, John McEnroe. I have a particular admiration for these people as they are able to give the most boring sport a first-rate audience.

I'd still be glad to see some more original choices of good showmen which also have something to say ... ?

How about Tina Turner, the woman from whom Jagger, by his own admission, got his moves and sense of showmanship?

Meat Loaf; his stage act and music epitomised the brash “me first” 80’s.

Following the example from Cheese of selecting a showman from outside of the music world;

Oracle's Larry Ellison; his lifestyle and charity works.

Freddie would also be my Number 1.

A fabulous voice as well!

I saw meatloaf live at the NEC a few years ago. One of the best concerts I have been to.

He sang a variety of hits to favorite songs, from rock to ballards and everything he did was awesome.

One of the best nights entertainment you could pay for!!
